There is a gar that is on the back of the OPTI that goes over the three bolts on the cam sprocket, and three holesin between them. Where does the pin from the camshaft go? Does it matter, or will it affect the timing? I have opnly done 93/94's, I didnt remember thedifference ont eh back. STeve
My 93 just had a splined shaft that went into the timing cover and fit right in only one way. The 95 unit I have has a round shaft that goes over the 3 bolts that hold the timing chaing on the camshaft, and 3 holes in between them to accomadate the camshaft pin. One of the holes is chamfered slightly. I put the old in for trial and error fit, and it seem s that is the only way it goes in, but the other holes fit, but have a little gap leftover for the bolts to hold the OPTI in. SOunds silly, but I need to be 100% before throwing this thing in. STeve
I was always under the impression that installing an opti was pretty much the same though all 6 years of the LT1s usage... (counting the 97 FBody)
I don't belive so. There was no pin on my '94. There was just a splined shaft coming out of the timing cover and a splined shaft coming out of the opti. There was a coupler that mated the two splined shafts. That coupler would only go one way on either shaft to keep the alignment/timing right.
I believe the '95-'96 (& '97 F-body) use a longer dowel pin on the cam to drive the opti.
Two holes should have an hourglass shape, the other one has the chamfered edge and is sqaure with the little notch towards the top of it, that's the one the pin goes in. In theory the cam pin won't go in the other 2 holes, hence the hourglass shape, but I believe you could force it if you had to.
Thanks for the help. Is that little dowel pin have a certain distance it should be? All I did was install a Hot Cam in this 396 and the new style ,95, opti and bolted it in.
If you did run the hot cam with your old opti the dowel pin had to be tapped down so it wouldn't hit the timing cover, you'll need to pull it back out a little bit. If it's a brand new hot cam it should be the right length already.
