Mine was just replaced. I also have an 85. Someone out here posted an article, the upshot of which was "Don't try this at home". I didn't. I took it in and had it done (they also replaced a faulty heater shutoff valve). If you take the same path as me, prepare for a major blow to the wallet.
I have a 90 and I replaced the heater core myself in 22 hours stretched out over five days,
Usually my husband does all the mechanical work on our cars but he did not want to get tied down with this because he knew it was a big job, so I did it myself with absolutely NO mechanical experience and less than an hours help from him.
I am glad I did it myself because I am not sure someone else would have taken the time to put it back together correct.
It takes LOTS OF PATIENCE and when it starts to get overwhelming WALK AWAY and come back in an hour or the next day.
The only problem I had was purging the air out of the system, that took a couple of hours and a new thermostat gasket.
Good Luck, Laura :seeya
So far so good. I worked on it a couple hours last night and I am almost there. I have to stop by Sears after work and get a 1/4 flex knuckel. One bolt on top that I can't get straight on. So far at this point I am into it about 2.5 hours and I feel there is no way to do it in the 4.5 hours. :nonod: I would say 6 tops. Maybe 5 with a lot of practice. :yesnod:
I am not sure why everyone says that. Its really not that hard of a job if you have the right tools. The hardest part that I am having now is finding out what one to go with now.
We just replaced ours in our 91. Shop time according to the Chev dealership is 8.1 hrs. It took us 3 days just make sure you mark which wires go back together with each other, we had to take the whole front interior of the dash apart to get at all the pieces, seats out, center consol out. It was alot of work and then to get it all back in again was not alot of fun take alot of patience. Have fun.
Have you finish changing the core yet? Can you tell me what need to take off from the top to be able to get to the housing bolts :mad . I took all the bolts off from the bottom already but the housing would budge. :cry . How do I take the bottom duct out? Do I need to?
