My experience with cutouts go back about 45-50 years. Back then it made sense on some vehicles on the track, reduced back pressure. Today I'm not so sure with all the electronics involved in current engines, it's far more balanced than it used to be.
As far as electric or not - how are you about getting burnt removing and putting on a cap on the cutout and when the cops pull you over for running open exhaust on the street (if you do that)? They do (did) get hot enough to leave a nice burn on your hand or arm if you got too close to the wrong thing (DAMHIK).
I believe what's on units like the C7's, it's all downstream of the emissions stuff and basically bypasses the mufflers when opened so it doesn't screw up the emissions settings and how the engine runs. Probably want something like that if you don't want to screw up the way your engine runs.
Most of this is a guess on my part. I'm sure someone more knowledgeable than me will chime in on your subject.
Noise? Sure, if that is your thing. Performance? You won't get much with just a cutout exhaust. If you're going to open up the exhaust, you need to open up the intake side as well, which can be costly (TB, intake manifold, hot cam, etc). Not much point in letting out more air if you aren't allowing in more air as well... that's where you will get a performance boost.
I'm sure someone will roast me but that's the basics...
more air in + more air out = more power. At some point in this progression, more fuel will also be needed beyond what the stock injectors can provide.
does anybody know if there is any problem when I install electric cutouts into the exhaust pipes between the pre-Kats and the main Kat?
Will the engine run properly and/ or will the Kat not be damaged if the cutouts are open?
It's a '88 with L98 engine with 3 Kats.
Thx for your help
I believe that as long as it is located after the O2 sensor, it would be ok. I wouldn't think that it would damage the catastrophic converter.
You might want to consider the heat where it dumps, and if the heat will effect anything around it, like your feet. (lol)
Wouldnt put it too close to the 02 sensor. Honestly I think its a waste of time.
Get some long tube headers and a true dual exhaust for a real gain.
So you mean leave all the KATs away? Is there anything else to do when doing this that the engine will run properly without the KATs? Thx for your help

If you want noise, go with cutouts. It's easier to put them before the mufflers instead of before the converters. If you want power, go with long tubes. You'll only gain a couple of hp over stock with cutouts.
