ZF6 locks me out

Default ZF6 locks me out

My car has done this twice now, I will be downshifting and it won't let me go into 1st or 2nd gear. When I shut the car off I will usually go back into gear once I mess with it for a few seconds. I think that it is the shifter causing the problem, should I get a B&M?

My experience with my 89 is that our ZF's do NOT like skipping gears while downshifting. The owners manaual has a page of explaination that this practice should be avoided. Why? who knows.

That's just a disclaimer for newbies who may lose control or over rev the engine. I can safely downshift from 6th to 3rd if need be(please don't ask), like Scorp always says, sometimes we use the "U" or upsidedown "U" when we downshift ie: 4th to 2nd, or 5th to 3rd

It's not a shifter issue, it's just the way it is. Gear clash and making the synchros work hard is the reason, I believe. Try double clutching, it should slip into the lower gears nicely.

Also, make sure the clutch hydraulics and tranny oil are in good shape.

Had to throw into this one- BE VERY VERY CAREFUL DROPSHIFTING YOUR ZF6- They're notorious for losing clutch slave and master-cylinder, which won't let you drop shift as you have described. (I had a similar problem with locking out and a rare grind dropping to 5th or 4th from 6th on the freeway). The guys here on the forum advised me to get my clutch master and slave changed- and NOT TO POWERSHIFT AT ALL, as it spells certain death for the ZF6 with master cyl or slave cyl probs. I've been told that the master and slave should be swapped at around 60K just to be on the safe side..... I think there's info on this at zfdoc.com that a forum-member sent me..... John
