Default Challenged by a Hemi Challenger

I usually don't participate in this sort of thing but....last night I was out late "exercising" the 'vette when at a stop light near my neighborhood a new Hemi Challenger pulled up on my right. Our windows were down and the Dodge driver looked over and said "Pretty car...but your time has past 20 plus years ago...you're slow in today's world."

I looked around...checked my mirrors...looked down the road, 3 lanes wide...no traffic for miles. I looked over and said " I have no problem in showing you my tail lights if you're up for it!" Dodge man nodded and said "let's do it!"

I pulled the stick out of OD into D and waited for the light. We got the green and I came out full tilt. The Dodge lost traction, recovered and pulled on me 2 lengths. As the LT-1 hit 6K I hit 2nd and covered the 2 and jumped another length...he pulled up to a fender length as I was running thru 4.5K but I pulled a full length as I approached 6K in 2nd.

When I hit 3rd the 'vette schooled the Hemi two more lengths and I lifted...speeds were WAY past "Go to Jail" at that point.

The Dodged honked and waved as he flew by....but deep down he knew...he had just been "enlightened".

With a little harmonizing your entertaining narrative could be another Beach Boys tune!

Default Zora would be smiling down from above!

It is always a nice thing for a C4 to spank some of this newer stuff. Especially a Dodge product, they are getting pretty big for their britches.

In Northern Virginia it seems that every Honda or Toyota thinks they can spank a C4. They even try when I am driving my "Tweaked" 427 in my 1968 C3. My C3 is no slouch but they constantly try to egg you on.

Unfortunately here where I am they will impound your car and then they "take it away from you" (legally) if caught racing on public highways. You can loose your baby trying to protect its reputation.

I never saw any Japanese junk at the racetrack when I am there. Something tells me that a 12 second Hondas are rarer than 12 second Corvettes.

Just think, Zora was a-smiling down from heaven when he watched you beat that Hemi.....

There's probably a doctoral thesis in abnormal psychology lurking in here somewhere.. Because just seeing a C4 "triggers" so many other drivers I wouldn't believe it if I hadn't experienced it myself.

And if they REALLY think it's 20 year old junk, they wouldn't bother.

Further: Although most of used to do this as kids and nobody ever got hurt.. I dunno that I would trust another driver beside me at those speeds now.

The highways are so loaded up with non-drivers, people on drugs and general purpose incompetents today, I think I'd just wave him on by..

I really need to get away from the 2.59 gears...3.08's would have made a big difference.

I've got a '15 Challenger Scat Pack with the 6.4 litre- stupid fast and very squared away. These are great cars. Now, having said that, I drive my Corvettes almost everyday and pull out the Challenger 1-2 times per month. The C3s and C4s are simply more fun to drive.

I agree. I had a 1970 426 Hemi Challenger 4-speed in 1970 and a '73 340 4 speed. The Hemi was all about a straight line....drove terrible....lots of understeer. Traded it to a Frat brother for his LS-6 Chevelle...much more car and drove great !! Actually the '73 340 was an all around better car than the '70 was. Challengers are fun...but they aren't the equal to 'vette in overall driveability.

I guess we all have our favorites...mine would be a toss up between the LS-6 Chevelle and a '69 Camaro SS-396/375 horse 4 speed I had.

A Close runner up was a '68 Z/28 I restored that had a 406/450 horse SBC/4 speed and 4.11 12 bolt...a real "Quarter Horse" that would occasionally drop into the high 10's on a cool night.

That Dodge must have been a R/T. 5.7 Hemi. I'm saying this because I have a Avenger with the Pentastar 3.6 liter (Corsa and CAI) with a 6 speed auto. It's no slough, but no way would it keep up with my LT1,,,,,,,oh I have the 3:07 gears by the way. The stock Challenger SXT runs the 3.6 (305hp and around 270lb torque).

Nice kill. This makes me really appreciate having the opportunity to race at a sanctioned racetrack weekly. Imagine taking your 6 second run and double it and be able to go through the top of third gear or into fourth hitting well over 110 mph without having to look over your shoulder worrying about getting busted, losing your car or killing someone or yourself. You get to talk to your opponent when you get back into line and give congratulations or get congratulated while comparing timeslips and learning what you could have done different to make the next run faster. I'm not bing a killjoy, but I have been around for a few years, raced thousands of races and have seen what can go wrong during a race, both on the street and in a track. Your chance of walking away while wrecking on a track are much better than on the street. We all need to think before mashing the throttle in a street race.

I had a Charger R/T (5.7 hemi) and my '95 LT1 (stock 6M except for catback) would run away from it.

Nice cars. I had an '70 LS-6 Chevelle 4 speed and a '69 Camaro RS Z28, so I appreciate those comments.
