Have the opportunity to buy a used programmer for a 94 LT1 w/auto trans. was not sure if it locked to the original vehicle serial number. called Hypertech and spoke to their tech support. He told me they stopped making that unit (345752) over ten yrs ago. He said that it may or may not work it would be a crap shoot, and that it also could completely wipe my computer and disable the vehicle. They no longer make anything for that car as it is too old and the computer is too slow. Does any one have any recent experience or advise on this? I don`t want to buy a new computer and then have to have it flashed.
That programmer would in fact "lock" to the original VIN.
They work by creating a copy of the factory tune and storing that in the programmer.
Then it uploads the new parameters back to the factory ECM.
The only way that unit can now be used on another car, is if the factory tune is put back in the car (restoring the car back to stock).
Then and only then can the unit be used on another car.
And even then it has to be a match for the same engine/model.
Now for the most important part.
Those types of tuners don't really do much for you in the way of performance.
All they do is allow you to change a few parameters, not anything close to a custom tune.
I had one for 2000 Silverado I used to own. The only thing it did really well was adjust the speedometer for the different size tires I was running.
I agree with RollaMo-LT4 both in the description of how it works and that it doesn't do much.
If you want to get into tuning, the '94-'95 Corvettes have a flashable OBD1 computer. There is free software and a simple interface cable (about $80) that allows you to custom tune your engine/trans.
They sell the cable. Look for ALDU1 and CABL2. Although it says it is for a '95 and the '94 uses ALDU1 and CABL1 I think both the '94 and '95 have the obd2 connector on an obd1 system. Call them to make sure which for your '94 Corvette.
Thanks to both of you . Just saved me $100.00 and a ton of headaches. I am not really computer savvy enough to start messing around in my cars computer. I just ran across it on eBay and was curious. Now I know better.
