GM weatherstrip cement....clean the rubber real good with acetone then follow the instructions on the tube of cement....you don't need new weatherstripping just re-glue what you have.
Would also recommend using silicone based clear grease on you weatherstripping to keep it maintained.
I would recommend you repair what you have. The same thing happened to my 89 Coupe and I used 3M Weatherstrip Adhesive. Just clean the joint and reglue it. When you price a new weatherstrip, you get interested in a repair!!!
:yesnod:
I used black gaffers tape (not duct tape) used for stage rigging. It is a heavy cloth tape. Just used it for a temporary fix. Started putting the new rubber on today and got the windshield done.
Thanks for the advice, guys. However, I guess the picture wasn't worth enough words after all. ;) If I took a pic of the other side (don't have my camera at work), you'd see the weather stripping has shrunk as well. Before it pulled itself away from the car, it had shrunk about an inch or more per side, leaving a gap at the bottom corner on each side. The right side, as you can see from the pic, pulled itself away, but the left side is still glued on (or whatever is used at the factory).
Can this still be repaired? Yes, I've checked prices and know I'd spend a lot of money for new weatherstripping; it's amazing how much friggin rubber costs. For the side that has shrunk, could I pull it off, stretch it out, and put it back with the GM cement you guys recommended?
Muchos gracias for all the help, mi amigos! :seeya
Mine had only shrunk back 1/2 inch but I just lifted it back a ways and stretched it as I glued it down so the corners meet. One word of caution: I finally figured out that mice were getting in mine at that location don't let that start.
You can take some masking tape and mold it around the gap and then fil it with black rtv. Worked well for me. Also, I had a split in my window strip and just filled it with rtv and scraped off the excess with a playing card.
If you do go with new weatherstrip, don't buy the aftermarket stuff from Ekler's. The corners on the aftermarket strip they sent me were at least 5 inches out of spec on each side, and it doesn't stretch that far - I tried. Get GM replacement.
