Default Torque converter recommendation

Hi and thanks,

Im getting close to ending my 15 year project. Im looking for a torque converter recommendation from anyone with a highly modified C4.

Heres what i have in a nutshell.

383 4bbl. GM fast burn heads, GM 383 cam (its .509I/.528E lift, 222I/230E dur), Full hedders.

Built 700r4 tranny, reverse pattern manual valve body. Lock up 4th only

3.07 gears.

Car is around 300 lbs lighter then stock (roughly).

Built for auto cross, but 99% street driven.

Thanks for your 2 cents!

My engine is not terribly different, I run a 2400 PI Vigilante. For street, I wouldn't go much higher than that, and with your torque you shouldnt need more.

I kinda like Bow Tie Overdrive's TQ's. I think they are acceptable quality and they're only$250. I'm running one now w/2200ish stall on my Z28 and I have too much wheel when I launch and almost whenever I stomp on the throttle in 1st.

Good luck.

Another recommendation for the Vigilante (Precision Industries). I've been abusing a pair of converters for decades with full throttle lock ups in 2nd and 3rd gears on a 10 second car. Average 150 runs/year. Broken trannies but never a broken converter.

They have a nice policy of a free restall. So you break the trans and it craps all over the TC, they will clean it for you. Don't know what you want? Try what they recommend and if it isn't right, they will restall it for you.

I have heard about Yank also.

Yea I was thinking in line of a daily street driven car. For and expensive stroker motor and purpose built trans I would spend more for one of the better TC's like Vigilante or Yank.

Good luck.

Sorry the best is a Circle D. I'd run a 3-3500 for that combo.

Having personally gotten in the middle of it before, I really try to stay away from a fight between 2 parties. Who is building your transmission? I would get their recommendation for the TC or at least buy it through them. When your transmission takes a dump, you might end up with the builder blaming the TC and vice versa. Get the whole system from one party if you can.

For instance, I would usually save money by buying a part and having a shop install but when I had a float sensor in my MB fail, I paid a little more to get them to install THEIR supplied sensor. Good thing too. 2 weeks later, it failed and "one more time, Baby" was at their expense. Had I supplied the sensor, they could have said "We installed it right. Get your supplier to warranty it." and the supplier would have said the installer screwed it up. Since it required a dropped tank, I decided to let them do the whole thing.

Thanks for all the recommendations. Will look into it further.

The owner of a tranny shop up here in NY is the one thats building it next week. Waiting for the TCI master kit. Just got the reverse manual valve body yesterday......
