Living in England, it is not proving to be easy to track down a Dana44 case to replace my 36 if ( OR WHEN ) it breaks :yesnod:
What i would like to understand is what is it in the 36 case that breaks, and are there parts availible to upgrade / improve its durability that i could consider as an alternative to importing a 44 case from the states
Yes there are some things you can do to help it, however they are not a guranteed to keep it from breaking. There is a heavy duty cover we sell, I believe it is SU-921. There is machine work required with this cover so I would only recommend it if you are having the rear rebuilt. Other than that there is nothing you can do, the housing on the D36 is the weak part and there is no way to make it stronger. The only thing I can recommend is not to put slicks on your car.
try http://www.corvette.co.uk and go on sales then on parts and click on rare parts and there you can find some dana 44s for sale in england :yesnod: good luck !!
I broke the 3.07 rear end out of my parts car(aobut 44k miles on it) in about 6 months of "spirited" street driving and I only have a handful of bolt-ons on my '86. I got a D44 from Justin over at Zip. He can help you track down a used one. I ended up with one from '96 6speed with 3.45 gears in it. In the hour that I've ran it since the install, it's been great, but my car has had several issues since then, and I'm still getting it driveable. A handful of new parts just came in, but I just had my wisdom teeth yanked this morning, so it will be at least a couple days before I install them. The rear was apart and he got me everything I needed, including the rear, batwing, aluminum brace and the slightly shorter drivershaft. He also was invaluable in giving me info when doing the swap over to the 44. His ext is 456 at Zip.
If you're going to spend the money on a rebuild for the d36, it's a bit more to upgrade, but then you probably won't be looking at a rebuild later.
Chris
For a decent mileage, 3.45 geared d44 with all the needed stuff to do the installation, except new u-joints, it was a little bit over $2.000, maybe 2100, if memory serves. Most rebuilds on d36's end up being around 14 or 1500 if you get deeper gears. I figured that since my car will see the strip, autocross and road courses more than once, it'd be worth it to plunk out the extra since my rear called it quits and moved on to the big Vette junkyard in the sky.

This was through Justin Abbott at Zip, who posted already, and he cleaned the rear and checked it out to make sure it was good before he shipped it. Nothing but praise goes to Justin on every aspect of the swap.

Marlon88, no wonder i can't find one in the uk, looks like they bought them all !!!!
I had been on that site but didn't think to look under rare parts ! :bb
works out at about $1200 plus i will need a prop and brace, so not to bad compared to buying one in the states
Thanks to everyone i guess i have got to start saving my pennies again :yesnod:
Is the DADA 36 really that weak? I have 307s and about 420hp without the NOS. Is a rear end failure eminent?
Dude........you are riding on thin ice. It might be OK with the 3:07. But if you upgrade to a lower gear......you better go with a 44 too.
Sorry, meant to mention that, too. Crazy wisdom tooth removal medication.....
The difference is not only in the stronger case, but the gears are a different size. The D36 is a 7.875" and the D44 is an 8.5" axle. Having seen both apart at near the same time, the 44 is a lot heavier duty.
