Default MSD and Made For You Looms??

I happened to be working under the hood of the '90 Friday night and noticed a wonderful light show from my left side plug wires. I guess this would explain my poor power and gas mileage when it's raining out. :mad

Anyway, I was thinking of replacing the wires with MSD 8.5mm wires (Summit part: MSD-31459) custom fit for Vettes and Made for You center bolt looms (Summit part: MFY-5035613).

I was wondering if these work well together. Are the "custom-fit" MSD wires long enough to work with the looms? Any other fitment problems/tips?

Thanks all!

The ONLY issue I know of is that the #5 wire isn't long enough to work with the looms. I just ran it seperate. :)

You can't tell in this pic, but #5 only goes through the clip right above it, not through the one above #7 also.

If that's the only problem, I should be set. It is barely noticeable, in fact, that looks pretty cool.

Hopefully this will bring my Vette back to normal. 6th gear has become useless and on my last trip to school (140mi) I only got 20mpg (normally 27-28) :U

Thanks again!

Then why isn't #5 going through the loom above it?

Hmm..seeing all these pretty spark plug wire routings..I may just have to put my plug wire looms on. (I got the same kind that Mr. Magoo has)

Funny you mentioned that combo. I just spent all weekend fighting with that combo on my IROC. I got the set designed for the small cap with the divorced coil, and I used the Made For You vertical perimiter-bolt looms. It's a somewhat different application, but overall, it SUCKED. My old cheapie Parts America wires were long enough to route around my valve covers. The MSD wires were as short as humanly possible and required me to run them over the back part of my covers. I had to play games for hours unbolting the looms, swapping wires, re-fitting and running them, etc. I finally got all 8 to fit last night. A couple of them are VERY snug. I hope I never have to change my timing.

If MSD made each wire 2" longer, I would have had absolutely no problems. :smash:

I use the Made For You looms and MSD 8.5mms on my '86 IROC with no problem.

I've had the MSD and a couple others's "custom-fit" sets and I can tell you they aren't. Buy a universal set without the distributor boots installed, do your wire looming and routing, then cut the wires to length and install the boots (they're really easy to do.)

Made4you still doesn't get the routing of L98s; the 4-3-2 looms put the wires in the wrong place. So I make my own with shelf brackets from Home Depot. Since we're all doing pics, here's mine with Jacob's 8.5mm ceramic boot wires.

If you do, make sure you buy the kit with the 90* boots, not the adjustable crap. My first set of plug wires was the universal set with the "infinately adjustable" boots. Infinate my butt. They kept unbending, right into my headers. After I bent them back a thousand times, the metal inside finally broke. $100 down the drain within a few thousand miles. This time I figured I'd try the application-specific kit since they use all 90* boots. Other than wishing that all the wires were about 2" longer, I don't really have any complaints.

Thanks for all the feedback everybody! I don't mind if one or two wires don't fit quirte right. It will still be better than the snakes nest in there now. :)

I ordered everything from Summit yesterday and it should be here tomorrow or Thurs. It will be nice to get my car back up and running. Gotta love it tho - even in its weakened condition, it can still make my friend reach for the "Oh S**t" handle :D

With luck it should be fixed this weekend. WooHoo!
