Does anyone actually like this feature? It was disabled when I got my car, but I was wondering if anyone thinks it's even remotely useful. Was it in all C4 6-speeds?
I have disabled it, but rarely will use the "one to four" light to skip 2 & 3. I only do this if I've no bars on the fuel level indicator and NEED to save gasoline.
So, it is remotely useful, but not worth mentioning or keeping... :D
I think that is why the General made it so freakin' easy to disable; they knew everyone would pull the plug.
Not sure how much, but I believe that the Corvette would have been labeled as a "gas guzzler" without the CAGS.
I just use it to get a bit more out of a tank if I am running low on gas. It shows, as the "range" will increase.
Not exactly sure how much it helps, though. It would be interesting to compare consumption between the two driving methods... Maybe an amateur experiment is in order. :)
I have a cagless LT4. After I swapped my gear to a 4.10, my gas mileage dropped to ~12 MPG (the rear tires are nearly bald now too). I decided to see if I could raise my ave MPG a significant amount by altering my driving habits. I started doing the 1-4 and shifting into 5th above 30MPH. My average mileage has increased to ~14MPG. Is driving like a granny worth 2MPG? I doubt it.
It's been disable since I've been driving the car. I use to use the light when I wanted to save fuel. When the 383 was installed, the light was disable. Saving fuel is kind of pointless now! :D
I still have it and don't plan on disabling it. A few times it has annoyed me, but I am usually going too fast and/or rev too high for it to activate. If by chance in does the 1-4, I just go with the flow. No big deal. I usually skip shift 1-2-4-6.
I've recently bought a great Competition Yellow '94 with 6 speed which I love. But the CAGs is a pain in the .... !You do learn to drive to avoid it but every so often it catches you.I sometimes find it completely stuffs your shift in that it kind of graunches if you hesitate.Do others find this?
Is it really as easy as just unpugging the wiring on the side of the Transmission if you want it disconnected??
I see you can get like harnesses for the disconnected wiring from Mid America etc.Is that necessary?
I just bought a 96 LT4 which still had a working CAGS. I had disconnected the CAGS in my previous 91 quite a while ago. The CAGS really is a pain if you're not used to compensating for it. It's really simple to defeat by just unplugging the two wire connector on the driver's side of the transmission. The plug (part from MAD or others) just keeps dirt and oil from getting in the connector ends when they are unplugged. If you don't use the plug you should at least tape the ends. I have read that on 96's only, if you unplug the CAGS you may get a Check Engine Code unless you add a resistor, I'll find out this weekend.
