Default 95 LT1 Camaro Heads

Hey y'all. I found some used parts and I wanted to know what you think. I haven't bought anything yet so please chime in! The parts are at a local speed shop All parts are from a 95 LT1. The stock heads are ported and polished and include 1.6 roller rockers and bee hive springs. Head casting number ends with 374, I don't know what the rest of the numbers mean. I need some Guru level knowledge! The shop also has the Cam from that Camaro. It's a GM Performance part, but im really nervous to buy something like that. Any input would be appreciated!

Be "wary" of ported heads. If the person who ported them knew what they were doing - they may make some real power - if not, they may be significantly WORSE than stock untouched heads.

These days there are some really great heads available for the LT1, and there are guys out there who know what they are doing as far as head porting goes. BUT - unless these have either a dyno sheet with the heads or flow numbers for each port - consider that you may end up bolting them on and making less power than with stock heads !!!

As for the cam - who knows - but if you look up the LT4 Hot Cam - you'll find it's part number 24502586 - that's probably the most likely GM Performance Parts cam that fits an LT1/LT4. It's a bit "warmer" than the factory cam (Duration at .050 in. 218/228, Lift .492/.492), and it will probably make around 425 HP with a set of stock LT4 heads. If it's a GM Performance parts cam - the should be some kind of part number on the cam - do some checking.

So - my $0.02 - it all depends on the price the speed shop is asking, and how much you are looking to "save money".

You might want to google Lloyd Elliot - he's a well known LT1 cylinder head porting expert. Check out what he charges to port a set of LT1/LT4 heads. Then check out the price on a set of AFR 195cc LT1 Heads - those two data points should give you a pretty good idea of what the cylinder head market is like these days.

I wonder when they started using cc #s to describe heads as there are a zillion ways to get to the same number with some good and most very bad.

Those parts are old enough who knows what they really do or dont need.
Could be fine the way they are or need over 1000 in work.
Just the way it goes....

Have them thoroughly checked out, Id pay to have them flowed also
Believe very little of whats claimed out there for good reason.

not everyone can afford new but noone can afford to spend it twice...and still have old stuff.

Thanks, I like how you phrased that. Makes a lot of sense.
