Default When Doing Injectors.........

86 L98

I have seen You Tube vids and some remove the valve covers, some dont. I just did my valve cover gaskets a couple months back. They sealed perfectly and not even a trace of seepage. If I dont have to remove them Id rather not...

That said, it doesnt look like the lower torx bolt is accessible with the valve cover on....

What torx tool did you use to reach in there?

dont temember but its worth it to keep going bigger (as in try t45) to make sure you have the correct size. easy to strip and easy to mistake one size smaller for actual size.

if your vc's are in great shape, take a rag and place it over the in er shoulder of the vc to avoid chipping the paint.

Probably not BUT you best be real careful especially if you want to reuse the VC.

Default Just spent two days doing injectors

I just finished installing set of Bosch III 22 pound injectors on my 1985 C4.

1st day was tear down. I needed to pull smog pump to remove both valve covers. The lower runner torx bolts were to low for any other removal. I Found that the last Bubba wrench that was in there had cross threaded two lower bolts on install. ( guess he did it with valve covers on causing to steep of angle) So I am glad I took time to find problems. Chased threads and all good.

Remember there are two torx bolts that are threaded from inside of fuel rail area into lower runner mounts. I started with upper plenum bolt removal and then loosen lower runner bolts. And remove plenum.
Remove cold start injector. Then lower runners.

2nd day
Cleaned surfaces of plenum and runners with brake clean and 3m red pad.
Pulled fuel rail and removed old injectors then rebuilt fuel rail with kit of 7 orings and 2 orings on cold start injector. (May delete this later).
Installed new fuel pressure regulator diaphragm. Need security torx bit for removal.
Remember Cold start injector has 3 orings but kit only provides 2 orings.
Cleaned top of intake (cover open valve cover area with a plastic bag) I dropped parts in oil galley and had to go fish.

Check vacuum PCV lines and replace. Lube new injectors with dish soap or oil install into intake opening first then lower fuel rail on top of injectors and pop them on slowly. Bolt fuel rail down and tighten fuel supply and return line with new orings.
Charge fuel system with key to on position. Look for leaks.
Do this a few times and check fuel pressure with gauge.

Look at plenum and intake gasket surfaces for old locating plastic pins from old gaskets. Pick them out. I Installed a new EGR valve since your there and it’s easy.

Used 1/4 Inch and 3/8 drive sockets with torx 40 to tighten bolts to 20 ft. Pounds. Used 12 or 18 inch extensions. Harbor freight has 1/4 inch torx set and worked great
Have car raised on ramps to help bending over. I sat on tires. Save back!

Could have done whole job in 4 to 6 hours for a first timer.
Hard points pulling wires off of old injectors. Old style injector connectors.
When removal a bolt is it hard to unthread? If yes run tap into hole.
Be prepared to tap threads into aluminum. 8Mx1.25 thread and clean threads of torx bolts.
Anti seize is a must. Brake clean and compressed air are your friends.

My 85 runs great and idles like new car. OEM injectors are terrible.
Sounds like hard job but it’s not. Take time and relax
