Where are you using dielectric. While it is good to use on the connectors it's absence won't be a problem. You can put it on later.
There should be thermal conductive paste between the ICM and the heat sink.
Just verified no conductive paste was used, would this cause the ICM to malfunction?
Thanks again!!
Heat can cause the ICM to fail, the paste helps remove the heat by transferring it to the heat sink and away from the ICM. If just installed the ICM should run, but would fail quicker from heat. How quickly, I'm not certain.
Thanks Bruce, think we figured it out, looks like the answer is pretty darn quick.
Thanks to all who replied.
Hopefully the new unit will last with the paste, it seems like a weak point in the system to me. I had changed mine a while ago to a pertronix ICM because I was changing the coil also and figured while I was at it I would do both just because the old ICM had miles on it, heat cycles etc. The unit did come with a tube of heat sink paste and I knew what it was for. Then another member informed me that the pertronix units had a bad reputation with the Buick community, so I guess I am in the wait and see zone. The car is strong for now, but for sure when it fails, you are done driving until repaired.
