Cruise-In II Veteran
Some years ago I sat in a Porsche (don't recall model) and just didn't like the ergonomics. In 1999 I fell in love with the look/feel of an '89 Vette which resulted in my buying my '88 Vette.
Try out a Porsche & a Vette and go with your gutt...

Got a friend who bought just what you are describing as a Lemons racer...it still has a few issues with clutch and carb, but is a great handling car.
I think if you were doing a transplant, an LSx variant would be a better fit. An aluminum block to drop some weight and still gobs of torque/horsepower.
I can tell you that the 928's do REALLY well cruising fast (>150 MPH) as I got to drive one in Germany on the Autobahn back in the late 80's. It just seems to squat down around 100 and changes personalities.

I would think if on was going to gut the 928 and just use it as a track car with an American drivetrain then great. Otherwise it will eat you out of house and home trying to maintain it.

Save your money and time unless you have piles of it ! The 1980 928 euro 5 speed 300HP is powerful and a blast to drive. However it will speed most of its time broken costing you money. I remember the radiator costing me $1000. Your choice unless you want the exotic look ! I do remember running that car well over 130mph in 4th gear too nervous to shift into 5th at 4000rpm mucho power for sure.

I had a chance to see my buddy's 928 engine outside of the car and its a work of art to look at. Beautiful castings, it looks 100% Porsche. Its been pretty reliable for him.

Does anyone here have any experience with both the 928 Porsche and C4 Corvettes? An interesting topic came up among freinds this week. We were contemplating buying a Porsche 928 for a couple thousand dollars and installing an LT1 Corvette motor into it. I just don't know what you would end up with exactly. Please, hold back your passions about bastardizing a Porsche with a Chevy engine, or your patriotism toward american Corvettes for a minute please. I'm mostly interested in opinions about the 2 chassis. Their refinement, the comfort level to drive long distances, high speed stability, cornering ability, braking, and fit and finish. Since the 2 drivetrains would have similar maintenance costs, and durability, I wonder if I would end up with something better than a c4 Corvette, or much worse than a C4 Corvette? FYI, the porschev would weigh in at about 3000-3100 lbs. when done from what I have gathered. A bit lighter than a stock Porsche 928. The chevy engine is actually lighter by 100-150lbs. Is the Porsche 928 a good chassis at all when it comes to road course or canyon carving ability? Or is it just a hiway cruiser.
I have not driven or ridden in a 928 enough to have any ideas about how capable the chassis is. I just think that it is a Porsche, so it must handle great! Very Naive I am sure.

The 5 speed is allot better than the Automatic.
You can get into the power range with the stick.
The 928s will shine in the upper end of the power band.
At a stop light you can wax them in a L98 or LT1.
If you where to take both cars to Germany on the Autoban the the 928 will cruise better at the high speeds and have better passing power (in stock form).
Just my 2 cents.
The best movie with a 928 was Weird Science

Here are some 928 FACTS.
Here is the 928 that the OP is talking about:
Joking aside, and going OT a little, I never knew about the 928 at all, until probably 7 years ago. I was SHOCKED when I learned that it had (from '85^) a DOHC, all aluminum 5.0L V8! Why was this shocking? We all know about the ZR-1, the lead up to it, and all the hoopla that went along with it's introduction. I think it may have been the most written about car of the late 80's. And most of the focus was on it's amazing DOHC, all aluminum engine. The LT5 engine is great. But all the while that mags were busting a nut over the up coming LT5 engine, Porsche was (relatively quietly) already making a car w/a similar engine -and it wasn't a weakling either, for the time.
*288hp in '85
*316hp by '87
*326hp in '89
*345hp in '93
...and all that time, I had no clue about that car. Weird how the mags of the time made such little mention of what was a fantastic car for the era.

The weight ratio is 51/49 in the 928. I loved driving that car. Lots of power and handled like a dream. Living in AZ we have canyons and plenty of open road to unleash what your car can do. Come see for yourself ! Better in a Corvette !!
