I recently replaced the HyperTech Stage II chip with the stock GM chip and bumped base timing a copla degrees.
Tonight at Raceway Park. in 65deg F temp with a 30.18" baro and 52% RH, she turned in a 13.10sec ET at 102.62mph, with a 1.856sec short time.
Though I'm certainly not burnin up the track it looks promising that I may get that 12sec time slip this season.
I think the more agressive base timing, possible with the stock chip, gave me a harder launch and so the better ET. Though the weather was "good" it was far from "ideal". Of course I chose a Wed. evening so the "Quick 8"s could lay down some nice rubber for my GY Eagles to grip into, and it worked (I could hammer the accelerator with no wheel spin).
Did you ever 'finish' porting the intake? What I mean is did you siamese deeper than 1 inch into the lower intake? I went about three inches and i can tell that i gained upper rpm.
Guys thanks for the support; and yes it was a very good evening. Frankly I was quite surprised with the time slips as the weather was good but nothing exceptional.
With only the chip change and the slight base timing bump, trap speed was up nearly 1mph and ET was dropped more than .1sec from the prior two outings on 9/13 & 9/18. And that's corrected for weather conditions.
I haven't ported the intake base any deeper yet and am considering going in only another inch instead of two. That would make the area of the siamese opening about the same corssectional area as that of the runners.
I should mention that my best pass last night was the first pass, after the engine sat cooling for over 1 1/2hrs, and I launched at about 150deg coolant temp.
Subsequent passes were around 155-160deg; with short times of 1.901sec & 1.857sec and ETs of 13.206sec & 13.179sec, respectively.
So, I don't know about other L98s, but mine definitely loves lower coolant temps.
Yes the new TC realy made a difference in both short time and ET; but mostly after I raised my launch RPM closer to the new stall point. Though I ran on street tires, remember I said the Quick-8 cars put down some awsome rubber for me to grip into. Also, I bumped rear inflation back up to 32-33psi. For sure DRs would bring more consistency on less than ideal track conditions.
Also, I waited till my opponent staged, brought my idle up to 1,700rpm, then inched forward and just barely lit the staging light. I think any extra roll-out time is important in getting the "best" ETs, though it raises RT a little.
Indeed, drag racing, like life, seems to consist of a series of barriers to be overcome. And a great deal of the enjoyment/satisfaction comes from overcomming each.
The next "barrier" after 12.999sec will be 12.1sec; no cage in this baby.
