I have an 1986 Vert with a fan forward of the radiator and a bigger fan aft of the radiator. I have a chip that turns on the Aft fan at 160 but I've never seen the FWD fan come one. What controls that?

Thanks,

A switch in the cylinder head wired through a separate relay. Do you have the FSM (Factory Service Manual) for the car?

Your auxiliary fan (the one in front of the radiator) is going to come on at a much higher temp... usually about 238.

You can get a new temperature sensor switch and swap them for a "lower" sensor. You can find ones that will come on at 215ish.

In the drivers side cylinder head, just below the alternator. It comes on at 238F in 86.

If your main comes on at 160 then you will burn up your fan motor. This one is ECM controlled.

Yes I do have a digital copy of the FSM ... unfortunately it is a dumb image file and I can't search it, but it is helpful. Appreciate the answers.

Is it a PDF you purchased? I have one and it searches well. It also has chapter labels, so I can jump to section 6-1 quickly. Takes the correct PDF reader to do so, though.

Why did you choose 160? Your thermostat will hardly be opening at that temperature! Your main fan will be running all the time. Your fan should only come on when the engine temperature exceeds the thermostat temperature.

Your engine is at war with itself. The main fan is trying to keep the engine very cool, and the thermostat is closing in an attempt to get the engine up to the proper temperature!

At what temp is your engine running? It's probably running so cool that the front fan will never come on!

Well ... long story short I had a code 41 with the original Hypertech thermomaster chip installed. Could not source for the life of me a stock chip so I had to buy another hypertech. Fixed my car. I actually thought it was set to 160 but it actually is supposed to be used with 160 or 180 tstats. The fan doesn't seem to be running all the time once warmed up and my engine temps are around 180-190F when hot.

Yeah I bought it years ago ... maybe it's my reader like you said.
