What is the proper name for this thing?
And can I replace the valve with one from a tire? They look pretty similar but I don't need to create another leak - one engine fire per lifetime is plenty :)
I thought I read that it could be used with a tire valve but I can't find it now.
Thanks for the help, all!!

It's called a Schrader valve. It is used to measure fuel pressure w/ a guage hooked up to it. It can also be used to relieve fuel pressure from the system. Some say you can use a tire valve stem, but some say you can't. I don't know one way or the other.
Schrader valve. No you have to use the ones that is required for it The gas will eat up the rubber then you will have the part two engine fire in your life.. :yesnod: :yesnod: :yesnod:

I just found the post by scorp about it and other said that for temp use it is OK. I only need it hold for 2 weeks max and maybe 150miles (one trip home). When I get home I'll get a real one from AutoZone. All I have up here is Bubba's House of Parts.
Is this an OK plan or a bit too risky?
Thanks

Lets stop and think about this for a second. The rubber that is used in tire valves are not chemical resistance. What where to happen if you used one for tires? I would guess that it would dissolve it and where do you think the material will go? Injectors maybe? Then your car will run like#$$@.

I just want to go on record as saying I did [b]not[/n] say that, it was others in a thread I was asking where to buy one that somebody did. :D I definitely won't use one from a tire.I just found the post by scorp about it and other said that for temp use it is OK. good luck on finding the actual thing. The valve CORE I can get..the actual VALVE (entire piece that unscrews) I can't. I had to pull one off of another TPI car.
Well I has able to get to a NAPA that had fittings for AC. Are these acceptable for long term use? If not where can I get these things? I feel like I'm on a snipe hunt :D
Every parts monkey around here has no idea what I'm talking about and insists the tire valve is OK. After seeing the valve, it is obvious the unit must be chem resistant.
The car is up and running with only a few minor vacuum leaks to fix. Got it down to my parking space (3 miles) w/o incident. It is nowhere near perfect but it runs. No leaks so far, I'll be checking often.
Boy, there is more butt covering going on in here than a Keweenaw Pride parade. :jester I worded that other post wrong - I would never blame anyone else for my own screw ups, after all is said and done, my decision is the final one.
Thanks for all the help!!

For what it is worth.....
I needed one and stopped in at the local heating/cooling shop. The guy gave me one. When I used to recharge refrigerators/air conditioners/etc. I used the Schrader valves with R22. Same thing as far as I know. Maybe someone else has more information.

I forgot to mention that the reason the old one leaked is that it was pretty loose. I could have removed it by hand. The new one is much tighter.
I wonder if the PO did some work on it and did not tighten it enough.
Hopefully the ones for AC will stand up to fuel

I do Commercial HVAC for a living and find that any Schrader valve sold for A/C is suitable for gasoline service. Many of the tire valves have Viton seals and are usable, the rubber ones are not. Stop an A/C service guy and I'm sure they would give you one. They are really cheap. The possibilities for disaster with the wrong core are great. (fires, death and destruction, OH MY!)
