I think it's a problem, unless I'm missing something. As long as I've had my car, my coolant resevoir would never fill up/drain. If I added coolant, it would just stay at that level.
I pulled it out today after cleaning out my CRUDDY radiator shroud. I pulled the hose running from the radiator to the res. It was good, no kinks or holes. I looked in the res. It was clean. I checked the plastic nipple running into the resevoir. It is completely blocked. But it looks like it is made like this - there is a plastic (same as the res) bottom to it, and it appears to be molded like this.
Is this some kind of valve that I just can't really see, or should I pop a hole through this so I can get coolant to the res freely?
When the engine heats up and rpm comes up a slight vacuum is created in the radiator and coolant is pulled from the resevoir; when the engine stops and cools excess coolant simply flows back into the resevoir, hence the two level marks Cold/Hot.
Well, I took some initiative and just drilled out the plastic in there. It actually looked like it was cast that way. It didn't seem to be a separate piece that just got plugged in the spout. Anyway, thanks for the advice guys.
