Default Folks with headers, I need your advice please...

I was about to install my headers tonight (SLP LT-1 Shorties). The bolt flanges on these headers are flat, except for 3 that have the raised "tube" like the stock manifolds have. I have to mount one particular header on the pass side so that I can put a stud in it to use to support the dipstick.

My question is do you guys still use the rear braces on the A/C and the alternator? The way they are setup, I can't mount the braces to the header bolts like stock unless I get some studs "made".

If I leave those back braces off, will those components flex under high RPM? Or is this just some GM quality control :bs ? Thanks for the help guys.

I have TPIS long tubes and was able to get all the AC/Alternator brackets back in place with some VERY minor grinding to one end of the brackets. You should still be able to use them with your shorties as well.

I kept them. Just had to modify the ends a little. I used Stage8 bolts of various lengths in place of the original studs.

I got 2 of the 3 support on my Hooker LT. If you don't put those on, you may have vibration with the A/C on.

I had the alternator crack because i ran it without the brace. The stock one would not fit, no matter what so I bought a piece of aluminum pipe, flattened the ends, drilled holes, and made my own. I ground the edges round, and it fits and works fine. I will polish it one of these days too.

Make sure to put some kind of brace back there. My AC on the 91 mounts only on top. No problems there.

Well, I got a really good deal on brand new AFR 190s, but they are straight plug design, which negates the use of any premade longtubes. Heck, I can barely get the plug wires on there with the shorties. And I certainly don't have the $$$ to get custom made headers. I got the shorties just to have a little less restriction and to be able to get rid of all the AIR/EGR crap. I will be running a true dual exhaust, and I think this will help out a lot more with the restiction, but, I know, not as much as long tubes will. Oh well.
