Question on setting oil pump pickup clearance...

Question on setting oil pump pickup clearance...
How do *you* determine how far from the bottom of the pan to tack it in place???
Leave it loose and let the pan "push" it up in place???
Tape a shim of some kind to it & push pan against it???
Carpenters rule & eyeballs???

My book, "How to build the small block Chevy" says to let the pan push the pickup down, then remove the pan and push it 1/4" in the same direction. This is what I did and had it tack welded into place.
