Default L98 Engine Questions

A non-forum member ask me help him get soem answers to a couple of L98 related questions so here goes:

1. Will L98 heads fit on a ZZ4 short block?

2. Will a ZZ4 motor go into a '90 and will the stock '90 intake fit the ZZ4 heads?

3. Will "Fast Burn" heads fit the L98 block?

4. Will the stock '90 intake fit the fast Burn heads?

5. Will the 385HP Fast Burn motor fit the '90 and will the stock '90 intake fit?

6. Is the L-98 motor considerd a Gen 1 engine or is the Gen 1 engine different?

I'm sure these questions and their answers will only lead to more questions.

Thanks in advance..

Default Re: L98 Engine Questions (vettmike)

1. Yes. The heads that come on a complete ZZ4 are the D-port AL Vette heads.
2. Yes. The 8" balancer won't clear the crossmember and you have to use a Corvette water pump and distributor.
3. Yes.
4. No (I may be wrong on this one and the second half of 5. You'd really want to get away from the stock TPI setup to take advantage of the fast burn heads, though.)
5. Yes, but no.
6. Yes, Gen I with roller cam and 1 piece rear main.

I think I'm right on those. If not someone will correct me shortly.

You can check out most of it on the GM perf parts website:

1. yes the heads fit the ZZ4
2. Yes theyll fit
3/4, the fast burn heads will fit, and i THINK the TPI setup will fit to them, but you know its gonna be restrictive
5. the fast burn motor will fit, not sure if the TPI will fit to that either
6. yeah, technically theyre both Gen I's to my knowledge

Youre best off just buying the ZZ4 and dropping the TPI onto it, maybe change the cam to something that suits the TPI.

the fast burn heads are a raised runner, only special minirams and the scoggin doggy base fit. the zz4 is a great TPI motor & the zz4 cam is wonderful for it. an accel or TPIS base is highly reccomended however. the 6-3/4" fluid damper will bolt on in place of the factory 8" damper. the zz4 is a good engine if you don't know the first thing about building engines & don't have a good shop around. larger runner or a super ram top end also would really benifit it as well as long tube headers. what exactly was your goal with the car anyway? also the zz4 & l98 are both considered GEN1.
