Le Mans Master
..... Do the basic troubleshooting ... Fuel , Air , and Fire at the right time in the right quantities = running engine ... look for spark , check fuel pressure , clear the coyote from the intake , and make sure that there are no rods hanging out of the side of the block ! .....

With the engine having shut down on the freeway is it correct to assume that the car is someplace where you can work on it now?
Are you fairly competent at working on your Corvette? How long have you owned it? What happened that led up to the engine shutting off on the highway?
Do you possess the tools needed to check your fuel pressure on the fuel rail at the Schroeder valve on the passenger side near the rear of the plenum? Has the car had any issues lately PRIOR to the highway problem? Longer than normal cranking, anything?
When does the the starter make this "Grinding noise" all the time, once in a while or only after the highway event?
Is the car a manual or an automatic?
Does the engine turn over now that it has cooled off?
Did you get any codes or check engine lights when the problem happened?
What does the oil look like? Is there enough of it? How about coolant?
It would really help us if we have as much information about this car as possible for us to be able to help you. Answer the questions above and we can make some headway hopefully!
Good Luck and lets help you figure out what is happening with your 1987!
