My battery isn't being charged. I have a new alternator, had it bench checked, and it's ok. I was told to rewire it, because some of the wiring is corroded ... badly. I will try to replace the wire that's bolted to the back of the alternator, use a new wire and go straight to the battery wire. I want to know if that wire that's bolted to the back of the alternator connects to anything else. I see it goes down the mid of the block and to the back of it, where it goes to the battery, does the wire branch off anywhere, or will it be a simple snip snip job. any help, pics, or diagrams. A wiring diagram would be nice, as the one in the Hanes manual is a little cryptic. thanks a bunch.
By the way, it's an '84 with the original Crossfire, I believe.
I too only have the Haynes for reference on an '84 Vette.
However my '88 and Scorp508's '87 have fusable links between the alternator and the battery. In our cases the alternator lines go to a block behind the battery and the fusable link is in that area. It resembles a rubber-covered length of solid copper wire.
The wire on the alternator output goes directly to the jumper terminal next to the battery through a fusible link. Make sure you have a fusible link or an inline fuse in series with this wire or in the case of a diode failure in the alternator , your car will likely catch fire. To put it more directly, DO NOT connect only a wire from the alternator to the jump terminal next to the battery.
I had the same problem. Turned out to be a loose connection at the starter. I did the same check as you did and redid the wire from the alt. Check the connections at the starter, even a loose bolt can cause this, according to the guys at Glenwood Auto Electric.
I have an '84 vette...and would like to know why you have this problem....So please let me know how you repair it.....I put an 140 amp altenator from tuff stuff in mine....and have no problems with any wires going to the altenator.....
I jacked the car up and checked the starter. sure enough, the battery wire was jacked up, and separated from the bolt. the wire was dry as heck and broke away like dirt. luckily, we rigged a connection and got it going. what you should do is get a multimeter and check the wire that goes on the back of the alternator and for the other part, there is a pull apart wire connection near the master cylinders, it's a red wire with a black plastic connection, right before it goes to the positive battery connection. if you get a tone from the multimeter, than something else is wrong, cause the wire is good. i didn't get a tone, because a wire separated from the starter. the car is finally working after 6 months ... yippe
