So last week shifting into first and giving it gas a rattle developed sound behind me not from engine and also 2nd gear accelerating also little rattle then stops no rattles from 3 or 4th
I assume one of those deals that a mechanic can't tell you what wrong unless taking things apart
I'm not really willing to invest in major repairs for this car altho I do love it.
Car has 117,000 miles on it

You could do the basics. Get car off the ground and with a stethoscope listening to bell housing and transmission. A little load from parking brake may help reduce the normal noise with the ZF. drain fluid see what comes out probe drain hole with small magnet looking for metal. Then decide what to do. Other choice put it for sale and leave it for new owner. You would want to have a signed and witnessed as-is statement at point of sale.

While everyone describes sounds different, a rattle sounds like it may be exhasut related. When you say "behind me" I'm thinking that low RPMs may casue drone, so as above put it up int he air and check. There is a lot of exhasut, suspension, tires carriers...etc that can make noise
