Got my ZF6 rebuilt. Shop says the reverse is acting funny. If you do not aggressively pull the shifter waaaay over and pull it into reverse, chances are, the trans will pop out of gear as soon as you let the clutch out with a buzz sound.
So i am wondering if there is an adjustment for this? Also, would changing out the shifter to a short throw help this?
What shifter is the most popular for this upgrade?

Rebuild failed. Shifter should not pop out of reverse.

contact zf doc; he can rebuild the shifter mechanism; all after market "short throw" shifters are just a shortened shifter stalk with maybe a relocated fulcrum point and does not address the little parts and bushings between the the stalk and the internal shifter forks in the transmission itself.

You might also have a bent or worn shifter fork, but I assume that was checked during the rebuild?

I tend to agree that something went wrong in the rebuild. BUT... I have a similar problem in that it will sometimes jump out of reverse when I let the clutch out, and my solution is to hold the shifter in reverse when I let the clutch out. When it starts to engage, it seems to 'seat itself' more securely in reverse, and I can release the shifter. I don't use reverse a lot, so I can stand the minor inconvenience. But I didn't pay for a trans rebuild, and you did.

The rebuild should result in a fully working transmission. Why did the shop tell you about this instead of just fixing it? Are they trying to give it back to you with this reverse issue? Are they thinking maybe you know more about it than they do? I know something is not right with the transmission, but the situation smells funny too.

Also, I don't think a replacement shifter will fix this problem unless there really is something wrong with the shifter itself. The factory unit in your 1996 is a good design... not perfect, but good.

When it pops out of gear is it only at first movement?

I have had several cars that do that, but with slight pressure on the shifter to push in into gear as the clutch is first engaged, it works fine and doesn't pop out during clutch engagement or after.

Have you tried doing that during clutch engagement? and does it help?

I have not seen that condition on our ZF6's before, but it is fairly common with C5's.

Good luck.

Reverse detent is accessible from the outside of trans and maybe they've just screwed the ball/spring arrangement. They should be able to check and confirm. This would only apply to '95 & '96 ZF. Actual 'blue-tag' ZF.

The procedure is included in this '95 Campaign Bulletin

If anyone has a '95 the VIN sequence is included.

95-C-16 ZF S6-40.pdf

There was also this TSB issued in '94 for the '95 ZF

47-72-01 ZF TSB.pdf

My C4 does this occasionally, FWIW. Several other kinds of vehicles I've driven over the years did it occasionally, too. I think the gears just don't quite always mesh fully in Reverse. "Occasional" is operative word here, though. It shouldn't be every single time, or anything close to frequently.
