1886 auto transmission question
Hi all.
I have to change the oil on my 1986 automatic.
the problem is i need to drain ALL of the oil because they used the wrong oil.
is it possible to drain all the oil without any leftovers in the transmission yourself ? or does it have to be flushed at a mechanic shop?
also is it normal for the car to set in gear with a big pop?
sorry from my english im from holland.
thanks in advance!

I don't think you'll be able to get it all out; probably drain, refill, then drain again, then fill. . .
The torque converter will be holding a lot of it, hence not really possible to completely flush. . .

DO NOT try this without getting verification but i had a situation similar and i thought we unhooked the return line from the trans fluid cooler and ran a hose to a tupperware container and one guy poured fluid into the fill tube while the other guy collected fluid from the return line. attempted to pour in at the rate it was coming out. fuzzy memory.

You may really want to find a auto repair shop that has a transmission flushing machine. The machine will flush out the fluid that's in the transmission and it will load new fluid as the old fluid comes out. Just make sure that the shop knows exactly what ATF is required for your '86!!
The flushing machine is fairly easy to hook up to the car. There are hoses that connect to the fluid lines in the car and to the flushing machine. Once everything is connected, the technician turns the machine on and it goes thru the flushing cycle. Should only take 30-45 minutes to complete.

Anything that is spec'd for Dexron iii - You might find iii (H)
There's likely Maxoline Super+ or a NILS product available that should do well.
You didn't mention what was used. That might be important when considering how to do a flush. I asked also how long it was used.
What was used? How long was it used? Time/kilometers

If it was incorrect transmission fluid, I would be less concerned. If they put any other type of lubrication or hydraulic fluid in there, you will never get it out. There is no way. You are more than likely going to need a rebuild.

RED in color? You only had it 2 days or you drove it for 2 days with? How many Kilometers?
You bought the car 'as it is' now?

You need to have it flushed immediately, use a Dexron III fluid.

It is difficult to say based on what youre telling us.
A hard shift into gear from Park indicates to me that the U-joints may be bad, you should feel that from the rear if that is the case. If your transmission shifts firm otherwise, it may have had a shift kit installed.

I've heard bad u-joints but mine always had a "ring" to them when going in to gear. Like a steel bell.

The fact that it is contaminated makes diagnosing your symptom very difficult. No one can know what the impact of putting oil in a transmission will do unless they have done it and quite honestly, I am going to guess it is VERY rare.
