Hi all.
I have to change the oil on my 1986 automatic.
the problem is i need to drain ALL of the oil because they used the wrong oil.
is it possible to drain all the oil without any leftovers in the transmission yourself ? or does it have to be flushed at a mechanic shop?
also is it normal for the car to set in gear with a big pop?
sorry from my english im from holland.
thanks in advance!
DO NOT try this without getting verification but i had a situation similar and i thought we unhooked the return line from the trans fluid cooler and ran a hose to a tupperware container and one guy poured fluid into the fill tube while the other guy collected fluid from the return line. attempted to pour in at the rate it was coming out. fuzzy memory.
You may really want to find a auto repair shop that has a transmission flushing machine. The machine will flush out the fluid that's in the transmission and it will load new fluid as the old fluid comes out. Just make sure that the shop knows exactly what ATF is required for your '86!!
The flushing machine is fairly easy to hook up to the car. There are hoses that connect to the fluid lines in the car and to the flushing machine. Once everything is connected, the technician turns the machine on and it goes thru the flushing cycle. Should only take 30-45 minutes to complete.

What specifically did they use? Brand, description and weights? I'd think it important to know which. How long did you drive with it? Kilometer/miles?
i don't know as i own the car for 2 days...
it is a transparent looking oil, sort of hydraulic looking oil
If it was incorrect transmission fluid, I would be less concerned. If they put any other type of lubrication or hydraulic fluid in there, you will never get it out. There is no way. You are more than likely going to need a rebuild.
i bought the car 2 days ago. i don't know how many km are driven with this oil.
but i drove about 250 km with it..
it drove fine, but when i put it in drive it goes with a little clap..
is this normal?
It is difficult to say based on what youre telling us.
A hard shift into gear from Park indicates to me that the U-joints may be bad, you should feel that from the rear if that is the case. If your transmission shifts firm otherwise, it may have had a shift kit installed.

Brake pads shifting? Been a while since I drove one so I can't remember if there is a lot of play in the pads when changing direction.
I've heard bad u-joints but mine always had a "ring" to them when going in to gear. Like a steel bell.
?? can you see my oil level from over the U.S?
of course there's oil in my transmission and i am going to change it.
but, i don't know why it "claps" in gear...

He is making the point that it is transmission FLUID, not oil. In your case, it may very well be oil since we don't know what was put in it.
The fact that it is contaminated makes diagnosing your symptom very difficult. No one can know what the impact of putting oil in a transmission will do unless they have done it and quite honestly, I am going to guess it is VERY rare.
