I get the 'clunk' noise coming from the back of my car. I think it’s the same one a lot of people have here on the forum. Most say its the U-joints, so now I'm looking to replace them. Is this expensive to do? Is this something that someone with basic car knowledge can do with a buddy or two helping? I will be replacing my rear bearings soon and wondering if I should do both at the same time.
Yes,
Mine felt solid, with the car on the ground, or off the ground and was clunking and grinding. I could not see any sloppiness. Once I got one of u-joints off, it fell apart in my hand.
I have done both sides, one was when I replaced the wheel bearing, which made the bearing replacement much easier, and the other with the bearing in, following scorp's instructions.
Remeber too some parts stores have the nice u-joint press tool for rent or free use. Makes things go much smoother, than say, a big hammer.
Also, some drive shaft places will do bench work at a very reasonable cost. The main expense is removing and replacing the shafts.
Good luck with your work.

I found a local truck drive shaft shop that pressed mine for $20. Only took them a few minutes. The hammer/socket method is risky and can end up being $$$ if you screw up.
