Default Cluster issues

Good afternoon gents,
Forgive me if I am posting in the wrong location. (this is my first post)

I have a 86 coupe and i am having issues with my instrument cluster.

First issue:
Cluster lighting comes and goes, one moment it is bright and clean and the next it is SUPER DIM, there is no rhyme or reason why it changes.

Second issue:
The cluster will not read anything over 167mph. (What the hell....)

My cluster was rebuilt a few months ago by Batee.com. Bryan did a great job and replaced the broken bits and I elected to upgrade the incandescent bulbs to LED's while he had it. I have spoken in depth with him on this issue and it seems to be a car problem, and not a cluster issue. Any insight or suggestions would be super helpful.

First thing I'd check would be grounding problems.

I second what Ben says.

I recently had similar issues with the cluster on my '84. Turned out to be the ground - the culprit being the one right next to where the oil filter screws on. The bolt there was crazy loose.

Thanks fellas,
Where would I find a diagram of ground locations so I can systematically check them all?

You will need to get the Factory Service Manual (FSM). They are model year specific. Try the for sale section or ebay. You can get the GM paper version or a CD with PDF files.

how often are you driving over 167 mph that issue two would be a problem? Wow. Haha, I didn’t even think these older corvettes would go that fast! What is your top speed? I just recently purchased a 91 C4 and I’m loving it!
