I bought a set of scorpion roller rockers and am happy with them. I also changed out my stock valve springs for "beehive " springs and am also happy with them.
[QUOTE=mtwoolford;1597098495]68 K and time for a rebuild? That's ridiculous.
Check the valve train on the #8 cylinder; on my engine the #8 rocker arm was off the valve stem, the cam lobe was wiped and associated lifter roller was ruined. Replacing the cam and lifters was a lot, lot cheaper than a rebuild.
After checking out the valve train, try a wet and a dry compression test, and a leakdown test. If the compression is still low, well then consider pulling the head and finding out whats going on in the #8 cylinder.
What was the symptoms? was it doing same as mine? I mean smoke n oil coming from dipstick?

Well actually no; I had recently gotten the car and wanted to do a "major tune up" which included pulling the valve covers for a "lookey see"; surprisingly the engine didn't "seem" to run that bad; didn't smoke; use oil , pressurize the crankcase etc.
I do seem to remember the compression being low on that cylinder, but I'd have to find my records for that particular test.
With your engine, after proving out the PCV system, set aside a week or so, pull all the spark plugs soak all the cylinders in a penetrating oil; rotate crank, so different cylinders get filled, let soak. Rings do get stuck up with carbon and it is possible to free them up. That might be all you need to do; plus change the oil afterwards of course.
Ok engine is out and rebuild is on the way ...
turned out that piston (#7) is the culprit!
so I was looking at a rebuild kit at summit : “Federal Mogul Premium Engine Rebuild Kits CSMHP760-000”
anyone got a feedback on this kit? Will it do the job for my stock vette? Your feedback is highly appreciated as I’m a bit in a hurry since the engine is apart and need to place the order soon (overseas).
TIA

It was cracked, I’ll try and post a photo today.
The block 14093638 GM 5.7LG SGI. The piston measure 4” in dia. But I’ll get the exact measurements today.
Unusual place for piston to break since crown is undamaged. Defective or faulty installation would be a guess.
With your kit, you really need to have everything measured and machined or serviced before ordering. Wear on cylinders ? Overbore? Crank turned or polished, rods reconditioned? You may want to work with machine shop acquiring the necessary parts. Federal Mogul makes quality parts for most street driven applications.
Thanks Kevova... the car is already in the auto shop, the block and heads sent to machine shop for measurements and checking. Bore is 4” exactly as per the mechanic but will confirm with the machine shop tomorrow. As for the kit the reason I’m looking at it is that it has almost all the parts required for the rebuild. But wanted to get some feedback (practical if possible) regarding The fitment of parts and quality. Other parts will be added also. Since I’m overseas I prefer to have them all ordered from one supplier (Summit in this case).
So any feedback would be appreciated and helpful.
What year is engine/car? Year is important 86 1 piece rear seal and oil pan gasket. 87 roller cam. Basic engine did remain the same. Crank journals would need to be measured after service to know what size bearings. Timing set is not included. I would use double roller. Piston would need to GM or equivalent weight. OEM and aftermarket pistons can vary in weight when trying to replace only one. Balance will be off if weight isn't within 1-2 grams of the other 7.
I am surprised nobody has asked if the car has been stored for a long time. Rings can get stiff from sitting and will loosen up and seal when driven. I am more familiar with this with motorcycles stored and then given a compression test. Dan
Good post, mines smokes like a chimney (BAD) after sitting for almost 3 yrs hope the rings dont do any cyl wall damage
Smoking out of there isnt good. Pull a breather is it pulsing out of there too?
It’s a 1991 L98 base stock with auto 700R4. The plan is to replace all 8 of them pistons and all rings, gaskets and seals, bushing, bearings...etc. the kit (Federal Mogul Premium Engine Rebuild Kits CSMHP760-000) got all these parts. Plus the valves (intake and exhaust) from Melling (V1192 & V1195)...
Thanks, I’ve prepared a list of the parts with part no. And photos and will hand it to the mechanic tomorrow morning to cross check and finalize... just the valve seats and valve guide could not find.. any advis ?
Valve seats and guides are not generally available to the public, replacement is not a DIY repair. Seats can be machined or refaced. Seats can be replaced, but it's really a machine shop operation. Guides can be resized, but I not a fan particularly with high lift cams. Machine shop can bore guides for new guide inserts.
Your machinist will probably tell you if hes doing guides he has to do a valve job, too. Dont let him knurl them. If they are worn, replace hone to size, do it right.
