Recently I have been stopping at traffic lights after my 85 vette has warmed up and the check engine light comes on. When the light turns to green it takes about eight to ten seconds and the check engine light goes out. I checked out the engine code and I have code 23. In addition, when the car is warmed up and I stop anywhere for ten minutes or so and when I try to restart I have an extremely hard time trying to start the car. I knew some time ago after hooking up a gas pressure gauge to the fuel line that my fuel pressure goes down slowly. I replaced the fuel pump but have not had the time to replace the fuel injectors yet.
Does anyone have any recommendations since this car is wearing me down with it's problems? Love to drive it but dealing with one problem after another can wear on my patience since I had got it. Just took care of a window regulator issue and hopefully that is the last of that problem.
Thank you in advance of any advice you can provide me,
Ron
DTC 23 is IAT sensor shorted, check connector and sensor for damage.
When is the last time you checked your oil? Is it over full and smelling like gas? If you have a lot of miles, your injectors may be leaking and diluting your oil, causing no pressure under low rpm. This would also cause your hard starts.

My Girlfriend's 86 does the same thing - IAT code set at idle. I haven't dug into the issue much, but I plan on starting with a new sensor/connector if the wiring looks good. The only reason I haven't jumped on it yet is that the stock ECM only used IAT for activating EGR, so I really couldn't care less if its working or not.

Yes, come to think of it I have been smelling gas lately. I lift the hood and can smell it. I purchased the injectors and a gasket kit to do the replacement but have had other issues that cause me not to get to it. I think the time is now.
Thank you for your response.
Thank you for pointing me to this site. I want to check out the fuel pressure regulator. The fuel pump I have already replaced.
Thank you for your response.

Thanks for your response. Best of luck when you try to repair it. I've got some digging to do on my car. Does your girlfriend's car have gremlins in it like mine. I call my car "Christine" like the movie. I have to keep eliminating the gremlins one by one. I think they keep multiplying. Good luck.
May not be the same issue, but I had an issue with the 2nd time and after that I started the car each day. I would have to press the accelerator pedal and then she would start but blow what turned out to be raw fuel through the exhaust. The fuel pressure regulator diaphragm was shot and probably original. I replaced it this winter and the car starts and runs really well now. My wife hated to ride in it unless we were coming straight home afterwards. For some reason she hated to smell like gas fumes....?

Both my 85 and her 86 were like that - you'd fix something, and a week later, a new noise or light or smell. I've worked on the 85 for longer, and at this point, most work is preventative/voluntary. It took ages to get there, but she fires right up and runs well.
The 86 I have less time to work on, and it gets driven less, so it still has issues - I've got the driver window aligned, but the passenger one still needs it. I've come to hate doing the windows on these cars. It has a dash bulb burnt out, antenna will go up or down, but only if you jumper it, the dash loses all lights sometimes over a bump, plus this CEL for the intake air temp. I'll probably get to those this summer. It'll feel overwheling at times, and you may find yourself wanting an easy way out, but I really think the early C4s are the perfect car for my style/interests.

WOW! My wife hates to ride in my car because of the gas fumes too. I will certainly try that out. Excellent. Thank you for the information.

Buckeye88 has a good point ... pull the vacuum line off the Fuel pressure regulator and if there is any gas at all in the line or
the connector then your FPR diaphragm is bad. Ask me how I know X2 since I owned my 1986. Bad FPR diaphragm

That's about what mine looked like, but where you can see the cloth/weave backing on yours that's where I still had a few scraps of rubber. I pulled the vacuum lines once and they were full of gas.
I have no issues with gas fumes or smoke since changing the diaphragm. Now if I could just get the OD unit on my 4+3 to quit blowing ATF all over my exhaust she'd be a lot more fun. I'm dropping the OD pan tonight to get rid of the remaining ATF and shutting the OD down until she's put away this fall. Between the smoke from the ATF on my exhaust and having to degrease the underside of the car every time I drive it it's easier to drain the fluid and drive her as a 4speed for the summer.

If you drain all the fluid, how is the thrust bearings, pump and associated supposed to get lubricated?
