I fixed the lcd polarizer issue on my 90 coupe and now I'm not sure if this is normal or something is off. When I start the car the LCD backlight is at full brightness during the initlat test but then the lights turn off. The only way to get them on is to turn on the parking lights or headlights. It makes reading the screen during the day difficult, is this normal or is there something that needs to be replaced?

I'm more familiar with the Digi-dash cars, but it sounds to me like you have a bad photosensor. The photosensor is located near the DIC for you, I think. Cover the sensor with your finger, and take note of what happens to the brightness. Next, shine a bright flashlight on the sensor, and again take note. If it doens't change, or barley changes when you do your tests, I'd wager the sensor is shot.
The backlight should be full bright at key on, and bright with the lights on. Otherwise, it automatically adjusts brightness from the sensor. On the Digi-dash cars, you can twist the headlight **** to the right to increase base brightness for the gauges, idk if there is a way to do it on the 2nd gen interior.
Thanks for the info. I'm fairly sure you are right about the sensor being faulty. Yesterday I did test its resistance while i had the DIC out. Although i dont remember the values there was a difference from completely dark, room lights and direct sunlight. I contacted Batee to get reference info on the sensor, once I get that I can see if it's a faulty cell or bad connection elsewhere.
When you take it apart you will notice the photosensor has a clear plastic window.
If you buff it with wax and clean it up it will let more light in and brighten up the dash a bit more.
