Default Scanning and data logging options on an 89

Just wanted to get some feedback and opinions on what sort of data logging setups fellow OBD I L98 guys have out there. I see Moates.net has an ALDL to USB set up that works well with the standard tuning software options out there like TunerPro/RT. I'm not really at the level yet to be getting into the emulators and chip burners. Just would like to log some data so I can send it off to PCM For Less so they can build a nice base tune for my car. PO dropped a cam in it and never had it tuned... Also, just would like to be able to plug in and view real time data for future diagnostic purposes as well.

I'm thinking the Moates setup with TunerPro RT is the most common and could be assembled for like $115 (Moates $80, $35 reg for TunerPro RT). Thoughts??

I bought a bluetooth transmitter/cable adapter for OBD1 on my 1896 vert from 1320electronics. Bluetooth OBD1 Adapter ($75 plus shipping)

I only get 160baud on this computer ... you'll be much happier with the higher baud rate on you 1989. The BT adapter worked flawlessly and I was able to datalog with my laptop on the passenger seat.

Awesome, thanks for the link. Looks pretty nice actually. What tuning software are you using?

I have an 89 also, look into the moates ostrich, if you dont know what it does well you replace the prom in the computer with a ribbon cable hooked up to this device called the ostrich. the ostrich has a usb port on it and you can make changes from a laptop . you can leave the ostrich permanently hooked up so you never have to burn any chips ever again

Really cool! So essentially what this does is function as an EPROM and allows for flashable tuning on the fly? Do you have the ECM mounted standard with the ribbon cable coming out and cushioned under the PROM dust cover? This may be the way to go. Sounds like any shop that uses TunerPro, etc. would be able to tune it now. I live in an area that has some pretty great tuners, but none of them will touch an OBD I with a straight PROM.

unfortunately you still need to use tuner pro, or 1 or two other antiquated problems, but it eliminates the hassle of burning chips, you still have to datalog from the obd1 port, but you can just pull over, change what you want from the laptop, etc of course this can be done on a dyno but unfortunately you still need tuner pro. fast efi makes a learning computer like the ones for their efi systems that requires no tuning.hook up the computer to their engine harnass and your done no tuning necessary its like $700-800 though

I remember seeing the FAST kit and thinking about going for it. But then I realized that I would need to convert over to a MAP. I'm sure they could wire up one for a MAF system, but then who knows how much more that would be. Do you know how well this system plays with the rest of the cars ECM functionality? Like retaining the ability to have a functioning digital dash, DIC, etc.?

I don't plan on modding the engine...for now, so it's not like I need all that flexibility, so prob the Ostrich route is what i'll go with. But it's great food for thought for future projects
