I took my 85 out last week to fill the tires and fill the tank, then drove up and down Rt. 70 for a good 30 minutes, decided to call it a night, stopped at Autozone to buy a parking bulb. Came out started her up, and drove about 500 feet towards the parking lot exit and first the radio shut off, then the car shut off. That was 8pm, got towed home maybe a mile away by 9pm.
Turn the ignition key... NOTHING.. not even a click. Bought a brand new battery.. BRAND NEW...turn the key... SILENCE.. no crank, no click.. NOTHING.
Headlights will pop up, I can push the courtesy light on... no horn, no radio, no dash lights and almost worst of all... windows are both still down causing me to keep a cover on her...
Turn the key... NOTHING... silence... BRAND NEW BATTERY.
What would make her shut down WHILE driving, with no warning?
There are some fuseable links down near the starter-I had a similar issue with mine when one of these blew. Jack her up and take a look at the wiring there and see if one of the links blew-if so there's your problem.
Might consider WHY it blew too-if it's just old wiring that's one thing but if you're drawing too much current somewhere else you may have another problem. Mine was heavily corroded so that could be all it is.
I had stranger things happen when my starter wire came loose. Give it a check while your in the area. Check the wires on the Distributor cap haven't fell off. Then I would take off Dizzy and inspect rotor and the ICM because they are prone to cracking(the harnesses that is).
Is it possible to put it in run and jump the starter directly? Also, can you test the other wire on the starter when you crank it to see if there is any voltage?
