I used the search feature, but didn't find anything on this. I was telling my mechanic that I'm trying to get my '86 with 140,000 miles to last as long as possible and rarely have it over 2000 rpm. He said it's the worst thing I could do to the car. He suggested that I regularly take it to between 2800 to 4000 rpm. I took it out of overdrive and hit the highway, but at 70 I was still only at about 2200 rpm. I thought I would get a second (and maybe third, fourth and fifth) opinion before I put it in second and hit the highway. In case you can't tell, I don't know much about cars. My main concern is keeping the car in good working order as cheaply as possible. I HATE repair bills. I've been extremely lucky so far. I bought the car used and whoever had it before me must have taken excellent care of it.
Don't redline it constantly, but it's good to know that everything still works. You need to drive it hard every now and then to blow the carbon out of the exhaust.
I think he was refering to a WOT (or heavy throttle) burst, not to driving slowly up to 4,000rpm in OD. Remember he said "...take it up to 2800 to 4000rpm."
He means for you to flog it every now an then, not gun it every chance you get. Do as those above have suggested, take it WOT a couple times a week up to 4000rpm, but dont push it further.
If everything is working as advertised (ie: fuel injectors good shape, cats not plugged, Oxygen sensor works, etc.) then blowing out the cobwebs should have minimal effect on engine performance.
In my opinion, the less rpms the better is a general rule for maximum engine life...everytime that piston pumps..little more metal is removed.
Keep driving it like you do...it will last-not much fun, but it will last. :)

Hehe, went on a 200 mile cruise today, barely got out of 2nd gear the whole day, 5500-6000 rpm's all day long, felt like I was in NASCAR, I have video I'll post later.

Some of us just never let those cobwebs build up. I try to romp on it at least one good time every time I take it out. Just to let her know that I still care, otherwise I might as well drive the Blazer.
Let's just see, traffic, traffic, traffic, traffic, suddenly no traffic. Gotta nail it for a few seconds, then just let it drift back down to the speed limit and just cruise.

Re: High RPM's ? (Nathan Plemons)
I wonder what a Vette quarters in with a 2000rpm redline.
I generally shift at 2500-2800 rpm in 'normal' driving conditions. If I'm getting off work at the end of the day, 4000rpm! :D
