Installed all three new seals in the timing cover on my 94 coupe LT1. Just my luck, it looks as though my distributor seal is leaking and throwing oil all over everything. Dealer says their is a special tool needed for the seal install and if not used it will almost always leak. This tool is apparently not sold to general public and I am in need of this to get my car back on the road without having to tear it down further. Has anyone experienced this problem or know where I can get this tool ?????????. Also need to find a replacement distributor drive gear since mine has a small groove in it. I installed a remanufactured distributor which works just fine, though I'm still using my old drive gear and could probably use a new one, anyone know where to find one ????????. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. :chevy :seeya
I think the tool your going to need is for the water pump shaft seal. If that seal is not installed properly with the correct tool, it will leak oil. I don't think you need a special tool for the distributor. It's the water pump shaft seal that everyone has the trouble with. Also, if the water pump shaft surface is grooved you should replace it or it will leak even with a new seal. A new water pump shaft is about $40.

I did not have any trouble with the distributor seal...just tapped around the outside edge with a hammer.
I did have much trouble with the waterpump seal-others too. Try a search. I ended up making a funnel/wedge to slid the seal over the driveshaft and into place. Otherwise the inner sides of the seal simply fold over and oil leak.
Thanks guys, I've ordered the new seal and drive gear just to be safe. Still trying to get that tool, tried a few times but didn't get through yet. Going to purchase a seal installer just to be safe. Don't want to keep taking this thing apart, Had it less than a year and it has spent more time in the garage than on the road. Checking with vette2vette about a good used distributor drive gear and hopefully all will go well after this. Anyway, THANKS again. :chevy :) :seeya
