Default Rebuilding 700r4

well my tranny has a fairly heavy leak coming from the front of the transmission. My 89 has over 185k on it. Figure if I have to pull the tranny then might as well rebuild it. Feels like it slips in overdrive sometimes so it’s probably due. So here’s my dilemma. Yes I plan on rebuilding it myself. My problem. What rebuild kit to get and where to get it from. My motor is not stock so I’m assuming I need better clutches. Already figured I’d get the heavy duty sunshell. I thought about getting a kit from monster transmission but I’ve read some horror stories about getting the wrong parts and taking months to get everything squared away. Should I put a shift kit in it or leave it stock? Should I put in a higher stall torque converter? Was thinking 2000 stall if needed. My motor is a 355 has AFR 180 heads, as&m runners, accell intake manifold, lingenfelter 211/219 cam, long tube hedman headers, Borla exhaust. I mainly daily drive it but drag it once or twice a year.

Definitely hardened/hd parts and a shift kit along with a 2,000rpm TCC. Also I would raise the WOT shift points to around 6,000rpm.

When racing my prior '88 with a 2,000rpm TCC I could launch at ~1,900rpm and get a real shot out of the hole.
The shift kit allowed her to "wag" her tail on a moderate throttle 1-2 upshift.

If you raise those shift points you likely will need hotter ign as I've read that our OEMs tend to fall off up there. I had gone with the Hypertech coil/cap/rotor combo.

I guess I am a chicken as I would not want to use my trans as a learning experience. I would rather pay someone that has done a couple hundred.

Transmissionbench.com. Good videos on the 4L60E (this was based on the 700R4,so a lot of similarities) to see if this is something you really want to try or leave to the experts as many people should do.

I did my own, biggest tip i can give you.
upgrade to the stamped "bonded" pistons from the 4l60e.
You will likely also need the spring cages to go along with the different pistons.

Also air check everything, get the atsg manual and the update manual for the 700r4 and the 4l60e, it covers the updates and backwards compatible stuff.

Rebuilt 2 4L60's (out of Suburbans) and bought my parts here http://www.bulkpart.com/Merchant2/me...e=4L60-700R4hp
and besides using the ATSG manual I watched this guy rebuild one from start to finish

Good luck. TAKE YOUR TIME!! and take lots of photos.

Also, if you make an error it only takes time to correct it.

There's a parts list in my profile..

Since internet asshattery doesn't pay what it used to, I own a transmission shop. If you have any questions I'll be happy to help if I can.

Unfortunately, I have no experience with Monster Transmission.

Those kits are over prices junk most of the time.

I bought a stage 3 kit that had the good clutches, steels, bearings, seals and gaskets but they cheaped out everywhere else.

For one, they sent me a pump rotor kit that was generic, it ended up shattering not even a year later.
Then they sent me another generic important part, the forward sprag, generic no name part that was a single cage...
these parts in a "stage 3" kit was just a joke.

I understand the need to buy a kit, for my first time it was easier and less confusing...

I also found it odd that they offered no actual upgraded parts... But those kits are all about making the seller as much money as possible.

Check the interwebs, i bet you have a transstar somewhere near you (if you live anywhere near a city).
there are also a few other names out there, but thats where the local shops get their stuff from.

When i stop in, i try to have my parts list ready to rock, knowing that they deal with pros i don't want to take up any more of their time than i have to.

You can do your rebuild basic, or go wild.
However if your trans functions fine, and it's not actually toast now then it's up to you how far you go.

I bought my kit off of ebay, i ended up replacing much of it, bit i did use the clutches, steels, most of the seals, the servo it came with went in my S10, and most of the bearings i used.

No experience with them.. I used the Toledo Transkit mostly. The quality is good.

The "kit" is like an engine rebuild "kit" it's the soft parts and cheap stuff.. Clutches and steels if you want them.

The real money is in hard parts. I like to choose those myself. I use WIT as a parts source. The quality is generally good and I like them. Toured their facility once and a friend of the owner trained me in transmissions years ago.

Transtar absorbed the company that used to be ATC and I don't care much for them anymore.

Two things, I HAVE done business with MONSTER transmissions and they treated me fairly and in a very professional manner and promptly delivered my rebuilt 5 Speed for my GM pickup truck. The transmission lasted until a sleeping migrant worker in a Toyota pickup found himself in front of our truck. My wife sacrificed the truck in order to avoid killing the idiot. The transmission worked fine up to that final moment, we put over 70,000 miles on the transmission without any issues. I have read all the accusations and complaints but they did treat me fairly.

Secondly, I agree with the poster who suggested that this might be something for a guy who has done hundreds of them. If you forget one tiny BB sized ball in a check valve or whatever you are doing the whole removal and replacement on top of fixing the damage caused. I have seen my 1988's 700R4's taken apart and there were a lot of small pieces. I was fortunate that the mechanic who rebuilt mine allowed me to be involved (to a very limited extent) and watch while he was rebuilding my transmission. My transmission was rebuilt to handle a bit more power than the stock unit and it was still a bargain.

I hope that which ever way you go that you get a good job done!

Well I got under the car and took the cover off to make sure where it’s leaking from. Looks like front seal.

Front seal is very common, while your in there sonnex has several upgrade parts such as the front pump bushing and the rear extra wide pump bushings.
There is also an extra wide sun gear bushing, and the beefy sunshell.
I went with the generic "beast" sunshell while I was at it.

With the miles you have, I would also replace the planetary gear set for front and rear...

I have the full forward sprag assembly out of a 2000 4l60e (ebay), however I replaced the sprag clutch bearing with a double cage borgwarner unit (29 sprag), I also did the same with the rear sprag, got a unit out of a 2002 4x4. Gave me a much wider and beefier unit.

For my front and rear planetary gearsets, they are out of a low mileage 4l65e...
I bought the whole assembly.
Where I'm going, lots of upgrades available, and GM was good enough to make them backwards compatible, even with my super early 84.

I got the pan off and found no foreign objects. Fluid has not been changed since 2010 when I bought the car. I don’t drive it everyday and fluid still looked reddish but I can tell it was due to be changed. Last couple of years though I’ve been kinda hard on the tranny testing my motor upgrades and data logging and ocassional drag racing. so I’m surprised it’s held up. When I bought the car I was told the tranny was rebuilt but the guy I bought it from never had the car running so you know how that goes. Here say. I’ll probably tear this thing down first to see if anything is bad or not. Or if this things been rebuilt before. Then I’ll buy my parts for it.
