I have just ordered all 4 wheel bearings for my 86 vert (gulp) Can anyone give me some general tips on changing the hubs.
How do the ABS sensors interact with the front and rear hubs? Do I need to remove the sensors, if so how? I looked at the rear this weekend and undid the sensor clamp on the carrier, but the sensor did not budge. Have I missed something or do I need to use force to remove them?
According to the Haynes manual you need to remove the whole rear carrier, but looking at it looks as if you should be able to remove the hub without this, has any body tried this?
What sizes is the nut on the drive shaft and the star bolts on the hubs?
I've done this a couple of times on the rears only. I did not have to remove my drive axels. removing the shocks allowed for more room however. In the rear you have to jack the car up fairly high in order to break those 3 T55 bolts behind the knuckle. You should plan on spraying the hell out of them and be prepared to throw some heat on the knuckle to help break loose the bolts. Whos' bearing/hubs did you buy. I had to replace a CR (Chicago Rawhide) after only about 2,500K. Pep boys replaced it with an SKF unit which by the way is the same one NAPA sells. Breaking the 3 bolts loose is the toughest part.
Thanks for the info, not sure yet what make the hubs are, its not that easy to get a choice in the UK.
Again thanks for the info. All other comments more than welcome
I've replaced the fronts on a 96 and a 88... You need to removed the caliper, rotor, then just remove the 4 bolts that hold the hub to the knuckle... You don't have to touch the speedo sensor.
The rears I just jacked up the car, one side, and removed the wheel. removed the cotter pin, mounted wheel, and lowered the car. Break the large spindle nut while the car is on the ground to keep pressure off the drivetrain. Then jack the car back up, and remove the wheel... I didn't remove the half shaft or the shocks. Just turn the half shaft so you can fit the socket in there and remove the three bolts. The front is easy and the back just takes a lot of time.
I just replaced the hub assembly on my truck. I know apples and oranges when compared to a vette, but I wanted to make you aware that you may need a either a slider hammer or a 3 arm puller. On my truck I needed to use a slide hammer with a flange adapter to get the hub assembly out. It was rusted in pretty good. Fortunatly Autozone here loans out tools so I didn't have to buy an special tools. Otherwise the job itself was pretty easy.
