Having fuel pump problems again. I replaced the fuel pump a little over three months ago. A week or so ago I backed it out of the carport and it would not crank to put it back. I went and got another pump to change and then return the defective one. I tapped on the filler neck and it cranked and ran great. Sometime it will crank but mot of the times not. I bought a fuel pressure test gauge to check the pressure. When I removed the cap from the schrader valve and pushed the valve in gas tricked out. I hooked up the gauge and turned the switch on. No pressure registered. I went ahead and tried to crank the car and it started. I was running about 35 psi of pressure. Turned it off no crank. Before I replace this pump again what should I be looking for. Can't hear the pump running when switched on. Ideas? Sorry for the long post.
To me - it sounds like an intermittent electrical problem. It could be the pump connector, it could be a ground connection - or it could be something internal with the pump. I'd start by checking the most accessible stuff first - IF you do pull the pump - go over everything including the wire itself carefully.
The silver lining here is that the pump comes out a LOT easier than a C6 pump does !!!
C5 guy here...a little slow on the C5 site...I’d do a voltage drop check on both the power and ground side of the fuel pump circuit while the pump is under load (running or cranking)...should be less than .5 volts !!
