Bilsteins make a nice shock. I bought all 4 (which I would recommend) from MAD for $279 Pretty much straight forward install. I would consider this a nice beginer project.

My '88 came from Corvette Mike with KYBs and they seem fine, but then I have no comparison with other shocks.

I too would suggest you do all four at once (KYBs are $150 for 4 at MAD); the fronts are out in the open and look to be rather an easy project.

Very easy job. I Just replced all 4 with Bil. Make sure you get your-self a socket that will fit the the rear bottom bolt and perhap get a breaker bar
to make the job easier. Replacement requires high torque.

 Degree of difficulty depends on the type of shocks that are on there now.

If they are newer, they have a hex socket in the stud/bolt which will allow you to use a hex type allen wrench to secure the stud/bolt as you undo the castle nut.

If they are the older type, the top of the stud/bolt will be a rectangular shape and my experience in trying to hold that still with a 1/4" wrench has not been good!

If the nut on the top stud is a Castle nut with a nylon insert to lock it on, and you cannot get a wrench to hold the top of the stud/bolt while you are trying to undo it, you have three choices:

Use a propane torch applied to the nut to melt the nylon retainer and the bolt will come off easier

Use a cutting torch to just ZSAP off the bolt/stud

Or use a cut off wheel to slice through the nut.

The two bolts at the base of the shock are easier. What you see is a 13mm bolt head and underneath is a 13mm nut.

Jack up the car and remove the wheel before you start. Also remove the inner fender well covers to get easier access to the stud/bolt and the nut

It's a lot of fun

Really not as dificult as it sounds once you get into it if you have the right tools:

Otherwise take the new shocks to a Meineke and let them do it :D

Another choice if you can let the vette sit for a couple of weeks Bilstien will rebuild the old ones for you.

Got mine from Summit. They were $27 each for KYB's.

Put KYB's on this year and it was a piece of cake with a basic tool set. It should take about six beers to complete all four including jack time and tire removal.

There is a socket like tool designed to keep the shock from turning when you are removing the top nut. I got one at Advance Auto for 10 bucks. Makes removal a lot easier. I have a 96. The rear lower mount requires an 18mm socket or wrench for removal. I did the fronts in about 2 hours and an hour for the rears.
My vette had about 53K on it when I changed them and it made a noticeable difference in ride - less harshness over rough roads. I used Bilsteins.

I had been hearing good things about Edelbrock Performer IAS dynamic shocks. I put a set on the rear of my 92 C4 two weeks ago and really like them. My opinion--they're a great medium-buck solution to deal with ride harshness w/o compromising handling. I paind about $250 per set of 2 from Summitt Racing. I'll be putting them on the front shortly. The changeover is an easy one.
