I tried searching the archies for this without any luck. My cars becoming increasingly harder to get out of park in the morning. The stupid button on the shifter requires two good thumbs of pressure to depress it and move the shifter out of park. I tried removing the button and spraying lubricant down the shifter area, which worked for a week or so, but only with a slight improvement. Now it's gotten so bad my wife can't depress the button any more. That wouldn't be so bad, but she's threatening to use a hammer on it next time. I figure this is a common problem and someones run into it before. Any ideas on what needs to be done to lube this properly?
TIA,
David :smash:
One day you won't be able to shift. This happened to a woman in our club. She had it towed to the dealership. I'm not sure what they performed to fix it. I'd definitely take it somewhere before you get stranded. :yesnod:
If you're parking on any type of grade, set the parking brake "before" you put it in park. If you put it in park without the ebrake on, when the car rolls against the parking pawl in the trans, it is put in a bind & sometimes can't be released with the shifter.
That is called Torque Lock. It is actually mentioned in the owner's manual.

NO, I'm not parking on a grade. This is all on flat territory. And it still sticks. I seem to remember someon talking about this before, what you need to do to remove the tranny tunnel cover and such to get to the area to lube, but now that I have the problem, the solution escapes me. I thought some one would remember...

I've got this same problem with my 96. It only happens when it is cold and just started. After I do it once, it is easier. It acts like whatever is activated by the brake allowing the button to be pushed in is hanging up.
I have not loked into it yet. Maybe someone will post a SIMPLE fix.
David Mark, Have you tried to adjust the trans cable? If it is not set correctly, it will not select the proper gear. In my case, the nut going to the spline on the shifter was way loose.
On my 89 if you pull the push **** off there is a little snap ring down on the shifter shaft. Take that out and then the **** comes off. Take the center trim/console pieces off and you then have the mechanism exposed up on top. Maybe there is something obvious. Atleast you will see more parts. Good luck
I had this same problem about 5 years ago on my '94. It kept getting harder to get it out of park. It's been a long time, so I don't remember exactly what it was, but something in the base of the shifter was loose and it was pretty obvious once the console was out. It hasn't come loose since. I had already tried the WD40 before tearing into the console.
Thanks Frogday, This is kind of what I was looking for. Guess I'll take it apart and look for that obvious loose area and hopefully find it and fix it.. I'll post a reply when I figure it out.
Thanks
