Hi. I have an 89 vette. I replaced the booster last year. This year the brakes were really stiff again so after reading I replaced the booster check valve. It's a little better, but still very stiff. Any suggestions on what could be wrong?
"Stiff" is a matter of interpretation. To me your brakes sound pretty normal; riding "high" and engaging after a push.
Sorry - let me clarify. When we bought the car the brakes were the same as any other "newer - non-corvette" car . Last year the brakes became harder to apply and the brake booster was replaced resulting in a bit of improvement. This spring the front brake pads were replaced with no real improvement. Beginning of this week (August 6) the brakes became almost impossible to apply. We removed and tested the vacuum check valve from the booster and found it was faulty. We replaced it and had a little improvement, but still not what it was when we bought the car. We've read that C4's typically have firmer brakes but we're not sure why they have changed from when we bought the car and want to ensure that it is safe to drive.
Have you tested the booster?
With car off Press brake pedal several times to deplete any residual vacuum.
While still holding the brake pedal down, start the car and the pedal should drop.
