I have a 8 hour trip on a 30 degree day tin the Vette BUT I haven’t recharged the a\c in 22 years. I’d like air con for the trip but don’t want to kill the compressor either. Should I mess with a refil kit or just leave it alone at this point?
its a 1987 vette that was converted to 134a 22 years ago and it hasn’t blown cold for at least 15 years
Since the condition is totally unknown I would not touch it with just a simple charging can.
thanks. I came to the same conclusion just after I wrote that. I don’t think anyone makes a mechanical part that will keep working after 20years of neglect

I would try it and see. I tend to agree with 65Z01 though. Something is probably not going to be right.
The worst thing that could possibly happen is the compressor is seized, and if that's the case then just unplug it, and you can still drive the car.
Take it to a reputable shop that does A/C work. If the system hasn't worked for that many years, it's time for a complete service. The shop will check all of the components, pull a vacuum on the system, add the right oil, new R134a and a dye to check for any leaks. If there is a leak, the dye will quickly show it. And a leak will cause the system to quit working and in those temps, A/C will be a big plus to have!
