I have a customer's car in here at the shop.
1992 Corvette...
Had a crank, no-start when hot. I changed the Optispark on it (aftermarket from O'Reilly's), as well as the water pump, plugs, and wires.
That fixed him up for about 4 months, then it came back in again with a check engine light... Code 16...
So I replaced the Optispark again, under warranty for him.
That fixed the code 16, but it picked up a misfire...
I spent a bunch of time trying to figure out what I did wrong during the install... couldn't find anything wrong, so I decided to warranty the Optispark again.
That fixed the misfire, and he was good for another couple months....
Well, now the car is back again... another Code 16.
Can't see any evidence of water intrusion or anything like that. (I explained to him about being very careful when washing the car, etc.)
Am I just getting junk Optisparks?
Is there some other component that could be frying these Optis? (Bad coil, etc?)
Is there another component that will throw a code 16?
We're on our 3rd Opti here within a year... makes me feel like I'm missing something, but every time I replace the Opti, it fixes the problem...
The jumper harness from opti. The code 16 chart is very simple. Are you diagnosing using chart or dtc 16 means opti is bad? Since every time it quits you replace opti, it seems it's either opti, jumper, or wiring or connector to jumper.
I have an opti from O'reillys also and the first one had a rotor screw just laying in there. Put Locktite on it and lasted two years. Just changed it out 2 months ago under warranty, good so far. Had a Petris opti before that and always had a top end stumble, was the opti all that time but warranty was out.
