I have an 84 Vette. The steering column was broken, so I bought a used one. I just realized I din't get a key with it. As I was starting to disassemble the column, I couldn't get the bolt that's supposed to go in the center of the shaft to thread in. (The one that locks the telescope)
I found my old stub shaft and bolt, and it would not thread in either.
ANYONE KNOW WHAT'S UP WITH THIS?

i believe it is a 5/16 -18 thread the use of a steering wheel puller may damage the first thread if you have a tap you can chase the thread then screw in a 5/6-18 set screw to lock telescope in place
You need a wheel puller tool with a center projection to deal with that tele control item.
Or you can fab up a projection to fit the center of your std puller to depress the tilt control pin while you install the wheel.
This is what I have always done.
The retaining bolt, for an open differential, spider gear cross pin works perfect if you cut a little off the end.
It fits under the lockplate tool perfectly.
