So the display is erratic- hitting a bump might turn it off or back on, and when going thru a place with alternate shadows and bright sunlight, as when branches are casting shadows,
the display can be seen brightening and dimming, if it ON at the time (8. Where should I start looking??

thanks for chiming in I've seen the video where he replaces the connector. I would probably just fix a broken connection - will poke around and find out how to remove the display,
I'd start by pulling the clusters, cleaning the connections, looking for obvious signs of connector failure, reconnecting and making sure you have good grounding (or add a ground).
The flickering is more typical of a vibrating loose connection(s) than a broken solder.
