Did you drive the donor car beforehand? Can't you just swap trans and all?
huh. Interesting thought...the donor car I drove until I got in a wreck. I suppose swapping trans and all would probably work just fine and be easier. Don’t know why I didn’t think of that...
trying to think of a reason I shouldn’t do that and having a tough time coming up with one. Any other thoughts, yay or nay?
Not really? If it works I would just swap the whole thing. Keep yours as a backup?
You might take a look at the FW too if yours is bad. You've already got it, so the price is right.
heh-now you’re thinking. Honestly the clutch on that car was totally fine. I’ve heard it’s really hard to reuse a clutch though, is that true? Something about needing a kit to align it? I mean I could just move everything over I guess...
i really appreciate the advice all this is is is brand new to me.
I would replace it because I hate to revisit things, but you could re-use it. You'll need an alignment tool. (Which typically comes in the clutch kit, or you can buy an aftermarket tool.)
At a minimum I would replace the TO bearing and the Pilot. (Which also come in the kit) A broken pilot is very, very hard on the front of the transmission and can be difficult to diagnose if it isn't making noise. (And they often don't)
Left to go long enough it will destroy the mating surface on the input shaft, or even the front bearing in the transmission itself.
I'm OCD about these things, so I lube the pivot pin and such things when I put one together. I think it makes a difference. It's quieter if nothing else.
I’m thinking I’ll have a shop do the swap for me. I’m inexperienced and don’t have a lot of time, and I don’t want this to turn into a month long project.
One thing old car was kinda hard to shift sometimes but I think that was the linkage that was a little bent or something. It would bind sometimes. As long as I use the new linkage that shouldn’t be a problem, right?
Other people will disagree with me.. But I would lose any DMF setup on the car.
I would use the LUK kit and flywheel. The quality is good. It will work fine for a stockish C4.
I have removed many 225-250K Luk and Valeo clutches from diesel trucks here because the pilot or TO bearing failed, but the clutch itself was in remarkably good shape.
If the car were mine, that is what I would do. Other people will have their own opinion.
Agreed:
take out the heavy, useless mass flywheel and use it as an anchor for your boat.
go with a lightweight flywheel. Use sprung hub clutch and shim the transmission countershaft to reduce
the noise and gear rattle.

I’m lost as to what you guys are talking about-shimming the what? Sorry.
Don't worry about it. It's only a thing if you have the ZF6 manual transmission that came in later C4s. Your transmission shouldn't have a problem with this, especially if you keep an original-spec flywheel on it.
I have a Carolina Clutch stage 2 on my 95 (H/C), and it rattles a lot if idle is too low or stock, but mine set at about 900, it does not rattle, or not noticeable over exhaust, fairly loud.
Yeah...am I the only one who realizes this car doesn't have a ZF6 and 40lb dual-mass flywheel?
No, I caught on to that in the first thread when a Duel Mass Flywheel and rebuilding an OD Gearbox was mentioned. But now we are transferring a Transmission from a parts car so we need to stay tuned in and find out what Trans is coming out and what is going back in.......... Or if we are in the same era or not.
Thats a single mass flywheel i run the OEM dual mass in my 90, the luke clutch is of good quality thats what is running in mine. my car came with a single mass flywheel
I hated the way it sounded and was able to find a OEM fly wheel. If i were you i would inspect yours upon removal per the manual. It still may be able to be put back into service. keep in mind if you decide to delete the dual mass fly wheel you must use a spring clutch not the solid disc with out springs! or it will sound like the power take off box of a garbage truck. i would'nt pull the clutch untill its slipping. good luck in your project.
