Some guys here that were in the Texas A&M Sports Car Club about 10 years back got temp jobs working at Texas World Speedway for Slick 50. They got paid like $6 an hour to drive four 5.0 mustangs at 50 MPH around the 2 mile oval spaced out .5 miles apart. They did this for many thousand miles (they had many drivers taking shifts). They changed the oil at regluar intervals and stuff like that. I don't know if the guys actually got to see any results, but It's a good story. :)
I've always heard that things like Slick 50 (and slick 50 specifically) are crap and only take away from your oil's ability to work as intended.
I think everybody is right on the money. Its a waste of money, simply use full synthetic like Mobil 1, change your oil/filter religiously (every 3,000 mi. or so) and you'll be good to go for a long time. :chevy
Well here is what I have been told. I am told that they in fact they do work (Slick 50) BUT... after using it in your oil you must add 2 oz of the stuff at every oil change in order for it to continue to protect. This is what they do in aircraft engines.

Ask my buddy who had to tear apart countless engines to repair damage and remove sludge from the engines. There are some additives that may be used, under certain circumstances in piston aircraft – but I assure you they are not the ones that you buy in AutoZone. I also assure you that any additives used in aircraft piston engines have no use in a automobile piston engine. Slick50 is crap.
Makes you feel good....use it...can't hurt.
Yes it can hurt. If you insist on using every mass marketed gimmick and gizmo in your Corvette, please reveal this information when you sell the car to protect the buyer. How’s the “tornado” working?
Come on what about those Prolong infommercials where they dump sand down the intake and she keeps runnin.' :D I think it was endorsed by Al Unser and an astronaut. You mean that was fake?! :jester
definatly dont go by what the commercials show, most of it is simply snake oil. Use a high quality synthetic, and high quality filter.
best one i saw was the commercial where they tried to stall out an electric motor, think it was prolong. with the prolong the motor was almost impossible to stall out, BUT then some wise guy brought in a "NEW" synthetic, funcky blue in color, and no matter what or how they tried they could not stall the engine out with this stuff( this was done at a trade show). guy finally admitted it was simply " Head and shoulders" shampoo, The trick is the zinc content of the shampoo.
The point is, any demo can be skewed to show desired results. Use your own research, then make your own decision.
For my self the only "additive" i used in my vette WAS the lucas stuff with the Mobil 1, then have switched entirely to Amsoil.
Several years ago my daughter bought a used early Honda Prelude. She religiously changed the oil and filter every 3K. At that time she just used regular dino oil. Her mechanic friend recommended Slick 50, so she used it per instructions.
She had to have the clutch replaced at about 140K miles (probably not the first clutch). The shop had to drain the oil as the tranny used the engine oil. She picked up the car and drove home about 25 miles. About a mile from home she noticed the temps were higher than normal and odd noises. She stopped and started looking around the engine compartment (I taught her about tune-ups, internal combustion engines, etc). She pulled the dip stick and found that it was DRY! The shop had forgotten to replace the oil they drained (of course they denied it, later). She took a chance and just put the oil back in. It drove for another 80K miles without an engine related problem (however the rest of the car was trashed).
After 24 miles, mostly freeway, I would have expected the engine would have been toast. After that it never burned more than a 1/2 quart of oil between changes.
I put Slick 50 in my 87 Astro at about 75K miles and immediately (like within 100 miles) sprouted oil leaks on the front and rear seals!
