Re: [Ignition]: Ate up another Accel supercoil. (scorp508)
Scorp, were you using the Accel brute super coil part#140013? The 140013 is suppose to be able to function in race/high temp envirnments? This info was gleaned form the accel catalogue. Sounds like the regular super coil might not be engineered to survive higher temp and use in a racing envirnment. Hope the bushing and new coil will fix your problem.
Re: [Ignition]: Ate up another Accel supercoil. (RonRed89)
The spark coil used in a cd ignition system should be designed for the particular cd. Scorp's MSD 6 applies 535 volt pulses to the coil and the spark coil should be designed for this.
Re: [Ignition]: Ate up another Accel supercoil. (jfb)
I have had the Hypertech 53 kv coil for three years and just burned it out yesterday. I can't believe it fried. I have an Accel cap & rotor with 300+ wires and stock module. The steel square frame is welded in two places on opposite sides. On one side the weld let go and there is a 1/8" gap. You can see where the spark has been jumping across to ground at this point.
I was very disappointed to find this! Oh well stock coil is back in and running fine.

I've heard, and I honestly don't remember where, that Accell products aren't that great. Of course I've also heard that MSD products aren't that great either, so what does that tell you?!
I'd say jfb is right on target, you need a coil that is designed to take the punishment that the MSD is gonna throw at it. I can tell you this, my MSD coil with MSD digital 6 & MSD wires throws an absolute lightning bolt! A lot more impressive than the stock system ever was.
Everybody will eventually hear something bad about every brand so you can't put too much stock in that. I do however believe in a complete system approach. You obviously like the digital 6 and it's cool features so it looks like you need to build your system around it. MSD already responded to you so that's pretty good service. I believe they'll work with you until you get it nailed down.
I was pleased with their quick response. I sent the email at 8:57pm EST last night and the response was received at 11:13am EST today. It even came from a real person's email there. :)
I inquired with them if MSD will be releasing a 7-pin HEI module at any time as right now they only offer a 4-pin.
That's pretty good time! Nothing worse than sending an e-mail to a company only to have to wait on their answer so long that you forgot that you had even asked, and at that it usually turns out to be a crappy answer. :cheers:
JFB, here are the specs on that 8225 coil from MSD...
Operating Specifications:
* Primary resistance is .6 ohms
* Secondary resistance is 8.9 K ohms
* Maximum voltage is 42,000 volts
* Inductance is 3 mH
* Turns ratio is 70 to 1
It's the unwritten specs that count. They didn't say what the primary insulation is good to , or what the peak current the primary can take repeatedly. So.... let the competition design their own spark coils. :D :lol:
