Researched all the filters (flow, efficiency, effectiveness, etc.) on the net some time back & determined that the AC Ultraguard was one of the best. Sorry, don't have a link to that independent study. Anyway, several months ago when I stopped by Pep Boys to pick up a filter they were out & no longer carrying them. After searching on the net I located 2 cases which will last a while. When those are gone I'll have to change to one of the other quality filters. Would rather have the Ultraguard tho.

When I heard that the AC Ultraguard filter was being discontinued, I went to my local Chevy dealer and picked up the last 8 of the UPF52's that were in stock for my 92.

The filter study link above gets you the same study that is on the ZR1 Net. After reading that, I would never buy a FRAM filter again!

fram filters have one of the worst reps in the business. K&N, donaldson or mobil 1 are my choices, i'm not really very picky about which one of the 3 i have, just as long as it's changed every couple months.

I find the 'online poll' interesting, but........................

Personally, I don't think it really matters all that much what filter one uses...
just as long as we all change our oil and filter regularly.

I know of owners who think just because they've paid $10 or more for a filter...that automatically allows them to skip changing the 'filter' at the next oil change interval. Well, I don't care for that theory at all.

I've been using 'Fram' PH30's for perhaps 8 years now (ever since TPiS header install). It's a lower profile filter that gives me the clearance I want and need to do the job without spilling oil over the right side header. (I believe Fram refers to it as their HP30, Sure Grip, Extra Guard Filter). Those who use a taller profile filter then Fram's PH30, will understand where I'm coming from.

Sixteen years of owning this Vette, I've used darn near every filter available, and I've always done a diagnosis of the filter afterwards. Yeah, it's messy, but interesting too.

I think what I've discovered over the years has more to do with the oil I've used, versus the filters.

My changes come every 3K miles, and prior to me switching to Pennzoil 20-50W oil, about 25K miles ago...I was discovering a 'break-down' in the viscosity of the oil over the 3K mile interval period.

I call it my 'feel-good-about-it-test'.

For those who are interested, try this: run your car about 30 to 40 miles before you plan to do an oil change. Let the oil cool down a bit, and then being careful not to burn yourself...lift out your dipstick, and slide clean the oil that's on the 'stick' with your thumb and fore-finger. Again, don't burn yourself!!

Then rub the oil between those two fingers...using a firm but consistent pressure, and see how long it takes for the oil to dissipate. It's my belief, that the longer it takes for the oil to dissipate...the better the viscosity.

I've proven to myself, that 20-50W Pennzoil, is what works for my package, and it just so happens that Fram is the filter of choice for me.

That could also be a measure of how dry your fingers are that day. A thicker oil might not fit into your pores as well and thus not be absorbed into your skin as quickly. That doesn't mean that it will lubricate metal any better.

I would suggest that you purchase a copy of "The Motor Oil Bible" and read it. Motor oil is extremely complicated and cannot be accurately judged by how it feels when you rub it between your fingers. It's very interesting reading (at least I thought it was interesting) and very informative. I know a lot more about oil now than I did before I read it, but there's too much to try and spew out here.

Happy reading

If you ever get really bored one afternoon, go to the local parts store and pick up various brands of oil filters... cut them open with a can opener and you'll quickly see what makes a good filter as compared to a not so good filter.

Having done the above when I use to work in retail Automotive sales... I wouldn't put a FRAM filter on lawn mower!

AC Delco here. I use to always use a Mobil 1 filter till I had a problem with my oil pressure. Then I compared the Mobil 1 filter to the AC Delco and realized the 6 holes in the top were almost 1/2 the size! :mad I later found out what the real problem was but I don't want to be limiting the flow of my oil, so I'm using AC Delco only now.

Nothing but K&N here. They flow best of all current production brands, plus they don't allow bypass as much as other brands. They filter good, too.
